-A few hooded figures entered just after dusk asking for a single room, one of them hobbled upstairs on a wrapped and wounded ankle, scratches and puck marks covered their leather jerkins, holes in their cloaks tattered by arrow volley or claws in the night in their travels to get there.  Shortly thereof half a dozen garda came bursting into the lodge, shoving patrons aside and kicking open doors.  A commotion was heard from the rooms above, though few seemed to know the circumstances, they know the garda left empty handed except for a single body carried out, the barovian domn naked and beaten his throat flayed wide open from the edge of a blade and smiling upon death in their arms-

[Word reaches the ears of Vallaki that the death count was higher than just one body. Turns out a dark clad figure had thrown a bomb into the farthest room at the end of the hall and three more guards had fallen asleep where they stood. When found, their throats were all slit and written in the dead men's blood on the wall of the room were the words "FOR GUNDARAK".]

A younger man clad in a black winter robe adorned with a golden emblem of a hand holding the sun, obviously hand crafted, has been frequenting the lodge of late. Occasionally offering strong drink to hard working individuals. A small piece of paper on the central pillar towards the stairs with the simple message.

"Seeking Employment. Long term preferred.
Experience includes:
Written letters of outlander trade-speak
Use of Harvesting Farm tools
Use of chest plate armor and other armors of moderate weight
Use of weaponized oddities such as hand-and-a-half swords, staves with two blades ends, etc.
And other various skills of higher learning.

Leave letter with the good keeper of this lodge for "That young weird tanned fellow".

[With Lake Zarovich having frozen over for the winter, the fishermen of Vallaki and north of the lake have all but abandoned any attempt to gather fish. A few hungry souls among them try to brave the lake, only to find the thin ice crack underneath them, plunging them into freezing cold water...]

A group of former Ionelus serfs had been settled at the lodge - praising two men by the names of Gavril Valentin and Krasimir Svetovar for sparing them their fates in the the starving land across the Luna. Eventually men from the Wachter Provence's nearest garrison took them up to be placed elsewhere in the Provence to be put to work - some of the men chose to serve their time in Wachter's militia. Along with this is a rumor that the Wachter officials welcome any and all healthy runaways...

The Lodge seemed to have more than its share of visitors at the end of winter when business usually slows to nothing, what with the ferry out and all. On one night just as spring was arriving, every room in the Lodge was rented by what looked to be a random assortment of dingy Outlanders. The group did not get along neither, let me tell ya. A young woman ran screaming out of one of the bed chambers with some sort of flying creature flapping about her head. The laughter of the others remaining in the room showed they found her misfortune a big joke as they only closed the door after her and returned to their muffled conversation.

[Tales come from the fishing lodge of a shadow stalking the lodge at night, entering rooms where workers sleep and shuffling through drawers and their belongings. Most men describe watching it with one eye half open and pretending to be asleep, although everyone heard one Gundarakite noted for worshipping the Morninglord yelling at it loudly about the dawn. Come morning, he didn't leave his room. Eventually in the afternoon Constantin kicked open the door with sword in hand, only to find the Gundarakite not there. There was little sign of struggle, it was as though he disappeared without a trace. The following evening, those still in the lodge remained in the common area, taking turns sleeping at tables while others stood watch.]

The woods near the lodge are disturbed overnight. A rumbling from deep within the earth trembles the delicate grasses of Lake Zarovich. The howls of the wolves are louder than usual as they call out the disturbance in their territory. The scent of blood is heavy in the air, all west and south down the road skirting the lake.

From the den nearby wound out shrill, screeching echoes.

A cheerful band of adventurers retired in the fishing lodge this night.  They set about drinking and cheering loudly as they celebrated the day's events.  One of the group's number, a loud-mouthed Borcan fellow, stood up and began playing a song.  He sang of how a band of extremely skilled, handsome, and capable adventurers overcame a small army of savage bandit lords and singlehandedly saved the surrounding area.  The truth (if any) of his fanciful tale is perhaps up for debate.

After nightfall and well into the celebrations, two tall and strong looking men draped in furs entered and left the inn multiple times.  They seemed to have a small disagreement with the group of adventurers, and then one of the patrons shouted at them to keep the door closed and they retired upstairs.

Then, a black-cloaked man come down from upstairs and wordlessly threw a throwing axe, squarely hitting the Borcan who was mid-song at the time.  Steel was drawn and a violent brawl broke out, and the cloaked figure clashed with the entire band of adventurers.  It managed to hold its own for a time, displaying exceptional martial prowess, before disappearing back upstairs.  After this occurred, a number of werewolves burst through the front door and charged into the inn, killing multiple people and sending the room into complete disarray.  In the ensuing chaos, both the band of adventurers and the fur-garbed men could be seen alternating between hopelessly trying to fight off the neuri attack and fleeing the inn.  What bodies of the fallen could be reached were grabbed hastily as the two parties fled outside, taking their chances with Old Night.

Come daybreak, the ground outside of the inn contained multiple splatters of fresh blood and at least one heavily damaged human body.  The outside front door area of the inn appeared to be smeared with meat and blood.

[The usual casting of nets, securing of rigging, bawdy language and jesting of sailors, and lapping of waves against the hulls of the various fishing vessels filled the dawn’s rising along the banks and docks of Lake Zarovich.  The occasional retching of an over-zealous, belligerent fisherman, chumming the waters below the docks was accompanied by the jeering of his peers.  All simply served the chorus of a typical morning along the docks.

However, on this dawn break, the rhythmic and intrusive pounding of hammer to nail, nail biting into wood, and muffled curses of a dutiful carpenter rung out amidst the cacophony.  Repairs, not to the hull or mast of a lake-faring ship, to the tattered remains of the entry door to the Western Fishing Office and Boat Repairs were underway.  The rotund, Barovian man worked feverishly, never pausing his fervent mending of the sundered door as sweat glistened upon his brow and saturated his clothing. Once finished, the door was slammed shut vehemently and the solid oak barring secured with a labored huff of wheezing breath.]

Talk begins again of another notice pinned to the door of the fishing lodge, it describes dire warnings and descriptions of common winter scenes.

This past night, a large number of Wayfarers, and others, entered the Fishing Lodge, sopping wet, and shivering from the cold. They all smelled unpleasant, and quickly sought baths, to remove the odor.

The landscape surrounding Lake Zarovich slowly surrendered to renewal.  The twisted remains, remnants of a blasted wasteland and wretchedly barren trees, began to sprout buds – foliage and leaves slowly unwinding to reveal their plumage. Foreign fungal growths withered into blackened husks and deconstructed into ash in the winds that crested off of the lakefront.  That which had frenzied the fauna receded, natural order restored.

Rumors swirled of haggard forms hobbling through the dark-enshrouded landscape to safety and of the waters of Lake Zarovich expelling several bodies upon the shore, their huddled masses scampering to sanctuary in the night.  A pallor of reverence and phantasmal heavy-burden labored their motions – figures bolstered by victory but beleaguered by an unknown weight. -- As the sun began to rise over the lands, cascading light in luminescent beams through the gaps in the branches and leaves, a forlorn figure shuffled into the foothills and trees of the Northern Shores.

In esoteric, cloistered circles – covenants devoted to the Thirteen exalting the One – a collective orison of praise was raised to the altruism of one of their devoted.  An exemplary testament to the mercy and sacrifice of the sequestered and obscured benefactors to the ailing.  Furtive breaths of that seclusive sect mouthed the name, Teyrn Bedca; the man securing his place among the weave and giving all to the tenets of the Thirteen – relinquishing life for the succor of many.

Upon the favorable winds of the sea comes news of rejoicing on foreign shores.  Word travels from a distant land.  Sailor’s tales of a despicable curse lifted and blissful reuniting – mud-encrusted and feed littered children locked in the embrace of their joyous and emotion-wrought parents throughout several households in Kellee, Tepest.  Fortune and benevolence did not grace every house, however, as the Malone residence – a dilapidated and silent structure serving as a reminder of the pestilence and wickedness of the Inquisition’s objective, the Fey, remained dark and uninhabited.  The search for a missing child, the one piglet that did not return whole and home, weighs heavily on the alcohol-laden breath of sailors returning.  Though what the child would have to return to, given a derelict and shattered home, remains a mystery.

On the eve of the celebration of Nevermore Night, tragedy hits the Fisherman’s Lodge along Lake Zarovich. It is a scene of slaughter and butchery. Several patrons of the tavern, all local fishermen have been murdered in the night. No survivors. Fortunately the tavern owner Constantine was absent this evening. He alone remains to clean up the carnage. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this crime….

One curious calling card would be noted to the identity of the criminal. All seven of the dead fishermen have been mutilated, each one missing his left hand and left eye.

Disaster runs ashore heralded by the screeching and splintering of wood near the Fishing Lodge on the Northwestern Shores of Lake Zarovich.  Horrified fishermen, dockworkers, and several outlanders alike rushed to the smoldering wreckage of the shatter husk of a lake-faring vessel ran aground.  The muttering din of rumors speak of the strewn bodies of the crew and suspicions of their slaughter prior to the calamitous landfall.

The days proceeding are filled with the toiling of workers, all seeking to remove and clear the debris and make reparations to the damage.  With the waning of each day, the crews abruptly halt their labors and summarily head for sanctuary indoors. The palpable tension in the region mounts, as the mystique surrounding the demise of the crew of seasoned sailors is accompanied by the hushed confab of the shore’s haunting. The morning’s vocation is no longer met alacritously by those who man riggings, nets, and docks; a pervasive sense of dread lingering like a shroud over the inhabitants and laborers near the shores.

[The first ever Vallaki Master Angler Competition came and went with rumor circulating that a monster 10 foot, 100 pound sturgeon was pulled by the eventual winner, a local templar of the Ezrite faith. The many gathered were able to raise 7500 fang for the local food bank in donations and entrance fees.]

For a short while, there is some hushed talk to be heard in the fishing lodge as the patrons repeat what they've heard from some of the crazy outlander adventuring parties. Strange pictures have appeared in some parts of the scrag caves, foreign looking symbols. Most prominent is the drawing of a flat looking lizard with a long snout full of sharp teeth. Have the water trolls figured out how to draw?

In the little ruined graveyard just north of the fishing lodge, the remains of a pyre can be seen. It appears the bodies of some unfortunate souls burned here, the fires tended long enough to reduce them to ossified ash.

Ever since last night, a new resident has taken a room at the lodge. The sound of sobbing leaks through the door to greet any who would walk upstairs to the rental rooms, occasionally a well dressed but not well taken care of woman can be seen ordering a bottle of alcohol or a meager dish of fish before heading back to the solitude of her room.
