Barovia - Lake Zarovich - Constantin's Fishing Lodge
« on: December 16, 2007, 03:35:03 PM »
Strange red dressed fellows entered the fishing lodge at the beginning of dusk. Their arms and robes showed the marks of fighting. They seemed to have felt somehow proud. Though they started to have a festival inside the inn, they did not order any food or drinks. Instead they just ate their own weird looking and still bloody food. They could be heard chanting in unknown melodies to these lands and praising someone called "Zhakata", announcing to have built a new altar on the grave of a giant fish demon! More they could be heard speaking about weak black dressed infidels and that some Devourer had shown his mercy to his followers.

The Fishermen tell of an interesting event at the lodge. A man dressed in red came to the main floor, accompanied by two women. Downstairs, a hooded man in black and silver armor rose and slammed his fist into the red-robed man's face. The chase went outside, and after some time the sounds of battle were heard. The earth rumbled and wolves howled, but soon all was silent. The Fishermen feared to step outside even during the day, wondering what happenned, and who won.

One of the rooms of Constatin's lodging, had a gruesome night spent in.. a great struggle seemingly, blood had been splattered over the walls and floors, though no bodies or such were found, just bloodied tracks leaving the room.. whatever happened, surely non would have the strenght to walk away, after losing bucket-load of blood?..

The fishermen speak of tales in the darkness of night, the ice-lady from the mountain above has collected her toll?... or the wolfs attacked against a sleeping person, all is but guessing...

For roughly two months (in-game time), the patrons of Constantin's fishing lodge have received occasional visits from a particularly driven visitor.

Around that point in history, a green-haired archer first strode into the fishing lodge, commenting on the easy winter and asking directions to Mount Baratak before buying several bottles of barley beer and continuing on her way.  On the following morning she staggered back to the fishing lodge, her breath still racing and her hair still toussled as if recovering from a long sprint, and her eyes wild with fear or panic in contrast to the cool and ethical "hunter's calm" which she had bore the prior day.  After downing several bottles of tsuika and barley beer, she rented a room for the night.  Thundering and scraping noises from upstairs suggested that the visitor was attempting to push furniture against the door and barricade herself inside her room, but the lodge's patrons and staff confronted the guest and stopped her from doing so.

The huntress returned to the bar after an entire day of restless slumber, identifying herself to Constantin as Viorica before apologizing for her previous actions and explaining that she had lost her way to Mount Baratak, instead happening across an abandoned fishing station further east along the northern shore of Lake Zarovich.  To slake her curiosity she explored the interior of the old fishing station, where she had evidently unearthed a horrific laboratory somewhere beneath the humble exterior of the fishing station, a laboratory where some deranged soul in Lake Zarovich's history had conducted obscenely cruel experiments on living creatures--including people--and had crafted a number of grotesque abominations from these subjects.  One product of such obscene science had been identified among the scattered notes as the Screeching Horror, a warped and towering fiend which continued to slumber in one of the titanic glass tanks as Viorica passed.  But at some point, as Viorica explored the cells where previous abominations had been caged, the Screeching Horror broke free from its tank and stalked the intruder, tracking her by scent as it searched the prison cells where she took to hiding from the monster.

At an opportune moment, the Screeching Horror poked its snout too far into the cell where Viorica crouched in hiding behind a clump of debris; the huntress then darted past the creature and out of the cell, and by her account a long and panicked cat-and-mouse chase ensued as the Screeching Horror pursued Viorica through the ruined laboratory, through the abandoned fishing lodge and among the trees, hills and bluffs of the surrounding countryside.  Eventually the Screeching Horror tired and abandoned the chase, and the huntress raced all the way back to Constantin's lodge in hope of finding greater safety from the beast should it resume the pursuit.

Since that night, the green-maned ranger has returned to Constantin's lodge from time to time, asking the patrons and the staff if any have seen the Screeching Horror--as she described it--or have heard rumors of the monster's whereabouts.  Viorica has expressed fears that the Horror is still loose somewhere in Barovia or the neighboring domains and that her intrusion into the laboratory somehow awoke the Horror from its chemical stupor, thus making her responsible for the existence of one more predatory monster in the world.  Clearly her intention is to find the Screeching Horror and put it down before it can cause anymore harm--and she admits that she will continue to have difficulty sleeping until this is done.  But in fatalistic fashion she acknowledges that victory over the monster is anything but a certainty, that her vengeful pursuit of the Screeching Horror could very well be her last hunt.  But Viorica continues after the abomination all the same.

Viorica has described the Screeching Horror as being a slightly larger and more evolved variety of the common hook horror, a monster possessed of great cunning, a superbly keen sense of smell and an intelligence approaching that of human quality; whether or not the creature can speak or otherwise communicate remains unknown.  The Screeching Horror possesses the typical hook claws and chitinous hide yet, unlike its siblings, is capable of pursuing fleeing prey for miles and is capable of leaping well over thirty yards in a single bound.  How much of these descriptives is fact--and how much is frightened exaggeration--is a matter left to speculation, but the ranger Viorica invites anyone who knows of the Screeching Horror's roamings to confer with her as soon as possible.

a small tattered note has been added nearby the lot of other announcements and marketing papers, on the wall of Constantin's, without any interest on the look over the lot of papers, mostly selling and telling fish-prices, the one paper might  just casually miss youre eye..

Whispers begin to spread of the return of the Cult of Zhakata, that the devourers performed a fel sacrifice on Lysagia Hill, and someone...unwholesome, and utterly evil was summoned. A simple message spreads through the undercurrent of dive bars and taverns, betwixt outlanders and natives who care to listen to such talk of evil-

A few fishermen speak of a scuffle that occurred between a lithe 15-17 year old Barovian girl with a small baby girl in her arms and a seeming drunken man. The girl was handed off to what seemed a trusted companion and the person left with the child in tow northwards. The scuffle soon dropped to a fist fight outside in the early morning hours neither was seen to return though various shouts were heard many inventive curses in Balok.

Later when the fishermen return there is a small pool of blood near one of the logs and the signs of a fight between least two persons and likely an animal of some kind. No signs of any bodies are seen.

Fishermen speak more and more of hauling in their nets, only to find a skeletal hand ahold of them which then yanks a hole in the net. A few even mention that when they looked over the side of their boats, they could see a solid white skull like face staring back at them. Once the skeletal hand even reached up and grabbed the foot of a fisherman on the docks, but he was able to get away. Outlander witches are suspected by the locals, but they only say so in hushed tones so as to avoid an outlander witch cursing them with sterility or some such.

In the afternoon of Month 11, on the 17th day, in the freezing snow a cloaked woman steps inside to borrow a shovel.  She looks exhausted, carrying a small ornate box...but other then that her expression is blank, even frightening.
She takes her shovel  out back, where she is joined by a cloaked man carrying a small bundle he holds with care.  The two are quiet as they make their way farther into the wood where, at last, they come upon two small trees, where they decide to start digging.
After the hole is dug and deep, Aceline pulls off her dark cloak and wraps it around her tiny bundle.  Tears roll down her cheeks and she carefully places the bundle into the box, along with a small dried pink flower.  She closes the box, carving as neatly as she can the words "Joslyn Oswald" onto the lid and lowering it into the small grave...

They remain there for the rest of the harsh night, Aceline refusing to leave her daughter and Darrick refusing to leave her.  At last he gets her inside the lodge and up to a room.  She refuses to eat or leave the room, and she won't accept visitors or messages and barely exchanges words with Darrick...it's obvious she won't be returning to work any time soon.

A fisherman relates the tale about being assaulted near the lodge by a crazy Green Garbed cultist, sitting around the table still recovering from his wounds he spreads his tale around to whom wants to hear it, relating how he came faced with death when someone from that cult "Ezra" almost overcame him.

Word spreads of an attack on three fishermen in the lodge
They spoke of the mage being hewed in a orb and his body wrapped in stone as he shot balls of fire randomly at the innocent.
Also explaining how he decapitated 2 fishermen at the bar and another was later found headless in a room from wich the door had been blasted in.

A bald man above atleast his fifty's has been seen spending time around the fishing lodge, some times among others some times alone.

As of late he is seen walking out by morning, hunting mink. Rumour says he takes their bodies and goes into the wood to find snakes which he tosses them to. Why the man spend a day doing this no one knows but it seems he had a discussion with a mysterious man outside the fishing lodge by night about two days earlier.

A rumour amongst the fishermen is that they have been hearing wolves fighting each other in the night, one even keeps telling the tale of a huge white wolf walking on two legs rushing past the lodge and attacking another walking wolf that was fighting some mad outlander out in the night. But this tale only comes out if he is offered a couple of drinks.

There is talk amongst fishermen of a man being found along the shoreline, washed up with the dawn. The man was clearly murdered in a most vicious manner, a deep hole within his cheek revealing the fatal stabwound that killed him. Odder still, even more so than his red hair, is his leg. The shattered fragments of what might have been a wooden replacement remained fastened to the end of his knee.

[Upstairs in the fishing lodge, a bloody mess was found inside a room. The head of a man, placed on top of his mutilated body, with two daggers protruding from the gore. A note was pinned to the forehead, reading off, "I have failed." - His dark leather armor and hood were neatly folded, blood stained, on the end of the bed.]

A sudden garda arrest is still being spoken of by the regular customers of the lodge, with three of the garda bursting from the cellar on signal from a civilian woman, arresting someone accused of being the traitor Salicka.

Whether or not this woman was really the traitor to the Count, or an innocent bystander is yet to be known.

Some shocked bypassers discovered a mutilated head just outside of the fishing lodge, it looked to have been gnawed on.
The head of the outlander has yet to be identified, but the killers seem quite obvious to the locals.

A fishing boat has reportedly made a rather strange catch in the lake just north of the outskirts.  Supposedly, a crate was pulled up in one of the fishing nets early one morning and inside the fisherman claim to have found a nearly drowned woman.

The fisherman talk about the growing number of Gundarakites seen inhabiting the lodge since the curfew was put into effect. Among them the mother/daugher duo Georgetta and Ilonka Pavenic.

~some of the food in the cellar of the fishing lodge has been ravaged, it's possible this was due to some manner of nocturnal scavenger such as  racoons or possums, but one can only ponder as to how such a creature made it's way into the cellar. With the near daily influx of fish brought to the lodge by deliveries it is considered a minor loss, and few think anything of it ~

-A few hooded figures entered just after dusk asking for a single room, one of them hobbled upstairs on a wrapped and wounded ankle, scratches and puck marks covered their leather jerkins, holes in their cloaks tattered by arrow volley or claws in the night in their travels to get there.  Shortly thereof half a dozen garda came bursting into the lodge, shoving patrons aside and kicking open doors.  A commotion was heard from the rooms above, though few seemed to know the circumstances, they know the garda left empty handed except for a single body carried out, the barovian domn naked and beaten his throat flayed wide open from the edge of a blade and smiling upon death in their arms-
