I tried this and an error is printed:

You must wear gloves or have a creature weapon to use this feature.

Nothing in the description about needing to wear gloves. Is that really the way this ability works?

It applies the damage property temporarily to the gloves, so you need something equipped in that slot for it to work.

Same goes for spells and varnish. You can pick up leather gloves for cheap when you're starting out.
