Encumberance on Examine
« on: September 11, 2024, 01:45:34 PM »
Splitting off from the body indication thread.

In the context of PvP, it might be fair to allow PCs to detect other PCs' encumberance level on Examine, as per the three tiers of encumbrance in NWN:

I think unlike the body talk, strength can be much harder to judge with robes, magical enhancements, etc. I wouldn't like this one myself.

To be clear, this doesn't tell you someone's strength. That's actually another mechanic that already exists in game that hints at people's strength value.

This would be a mechanic to tell you how encumbered they are, effectively by reading their gait. After all it's reasonable to deduce that the penalty to someone's speed could actually be read.

In Arelith this is mentioned in the tracks left behind which you can examine ("they appear to be struggling under a heavy burden" or something like, that, forget the wording.)

I do like this idea.
Speed wise monks and Barbs walk faster so the gait may be a bit hard to tell.
but give anyone a heavier than they can hold pack and sure enough they will show it on their face and body.
A hunched back, Sweat beading down, Red cheeks, Expression of "PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!! I WANT TO STOP FOR A BREAK!!!!"

I don't like this for 1 specific reason...

FAR too easy to exploit for PVP...and there are far more then enough exploits already out there for PVP, let alone knowing your target has no chance of running away.

Do people really wander around encumbered willingly?

I realize this is an offshoot of the body indication thread so I don't want to derail it, but I don't really see the point.  Personally, I refuse to go anywhere if I'm encumbered and make sure I never will be encumbered well before I do anything where I might be.  This is for all my characters, not just Strength based ones. But Bulls Strength is easy enough to acquire regardless.  So with Bulls Strength up, I assume that you wouldn't get any additional info while using Examine?

Crafters slowwalk all the time, especially smiths.  Kinda just goes with the job.

I don't think people will instigate pvp based on encumberance it's hardly an opt in. And besides hexblades can encumber people with an ability.

People already exploit AFK, Caravan transitions and one worded lines with 2 seconds to react...yes...they will.

All of these are rulebreaks and you should report them if they have occurred.

The fact of the matter is that people whom are going to break the rules will exist even with a system that is ironclad "no fun allowed" and the acceptance or denial of this kind of system will not change that fact nor do I think it would increase the incidence rate.

If it's not causing exhaustion it shouldn't be visible. If someone can't run, they're not running. If someone is stopping frequently to pace themselves, they're pacing appropriately. The notification is redundant for these signs, but being able to notice when allies or enemies are potentially out of breath with a wisdom / spot check is useful. Or if someone has no breath at all in the case of undead. An insightful bard wouldn't necessarily have to ask or be asked for epic of the lost king.

Ohk so it's just creates a potential exploit that rule breakers use just like all the others. What's the point here?

Exploiter gunna Exploit.
