Minodora Zalken

There was nothing particularly appealing about the very plain Minodora.  A Dementileuese common woman, she made her living washing clothes.  She was a bit smarter than others, and liked to read at the library on her days off.  Though plain, she had no shortage of equally ordinary suitors, but her parents would not allow her to marry just anyone, holding out hope that some more esteemed suitor would manifest from the ether and whisk their daughter off to a life of luxury.

Strangely enough, hopes and dreams can come true, and Minodora's habit of reading caught the attention of one fairly respected Doctor Jean Zalken. A medical professional who had gained a mild amount of esteem for his advanced treatments of war injuries, he took an interest in Minodora.  Minodora was not sure what she did to warrant the attention, perhaps Dr. Zalken was getting too old to wait for the right match himself.  However, when Minodora's parents caught wind that a Doctor had taken interest, they pressured Minodora into a courtship.  Minodora realized such an opportunity was unheard of, and decided she'd had enough of washing clothes she could never afford to wear.

As such, the lowborn Minodora was wed to Doctor Jean Zalken .  No modest affair even by the standards of a Doctor's salary, he even bought her a gorgeous wedding gown made by a famous elven designer.  The happiest day of her life was spent dancing in that gown, a memory often visited as the months ahead grew bleak...

The nights grew longer and longer as her condition worsened.  The hospices and churches could not pray the illness away any more than modern medicine could evict it from her chest.  Weeks grew into months, and the agony in her chest spread to every muscle in her body, every labored breath and horrendously choking cough sending pain through her whole body.  What a useless man her husband had turned out to be, a doctor that could not cure her.  She used what breath she could spare to remind him of what a failure he was, anger and despair all that could numb the pain whenever the last dose of opium started to wear down. Finally though, relief came, as the last breath of air escaped her lungs and the darkness closed in around her. Watching the tears in her husband's eyes as her final breath escaped her, she felt oblivion relieve all the pain and suffering at once, and for a split second finally remembered what peace felt like.

The cough has been persistent for three months now, showing no response to treatment either standard nor exotic, mundane nor magical. The powers that be seem to have no desire for my wife to live.  The gods thus challenge me, I will find a cure for my wife despite them. I have bested death in so many other forms, it now hides from me and mocks me, using my love as a shield from my scalpel, turning her against me. But laugh no longer death shall, as I will remove the stain of mortality from human existence, and dance upon Death's own grave.

The cough was unbearable.  Each time her dad coughed, it was like someone invaded her mind and flooded her head with someone else's memories.  A woman that looked so much like Minodora, but without the scars, the stitched flesh, and somehow all her skin matched in the same color. She saw through this woman's eyes, looking in a mirror, sickly and pale, coughing, wheezing, desperate for air. That woman turned to Dr. Zalken and told him he was a terrible doctor, that he should be ashamed. That wasn't right though, Dr. Zalken was a great dad, and a great doctor. This other woman had it wrong.

The coughing... it wouldn't stop, and the images in her mind wouldn't either. Until, finally, they did... and Minodora finally came out of the visions to find Dr. Zalken's neck grasped tightly in her hands, his face blue and eyes rolled back. His corpse dangled helplessly in his creation's hands. The shock of what she'd done sank in deep, and she quickly began to try to fix him.  Carefully, one by one, she dismantled every part of the body she could. She stored them all away neatly in preserve jars, but the damage to the head, neck, and brain were all extensive.

If I keep the skin from his face in tact... I can probably find a new head to wrap it around. He'll look just like new, no one will tell when we return to Port. He can go back to being a doctor... and be my dad again.
