I'm sure this has been mentioned like a hundred times but, some way to tell when another player is typing. Like a three dots blurb or something.

I personally both love and hate this. On the one hand, it makes timing for RP a lot more explicit... but it also makes me feel like it makes 'whispering' a lot more obvious as well as introduces a smidge of meta-pseudo-knowledge if they are 'typing' and then nothing comes out, implying they are PMing people.

I wanna point out, Cormyr and the Dalelands has this, and you can turn it off and on. This could be extremely useful in this if it were added.

I'm not big on people being able to meta my high-stakes RP.  We already had a big thing about stealth we worked through recently.

I think there's a compromise there: if you're typing in the regular voice, aloud, then the dots or whatever over your character's head. If you're whispering, they don't.

I agree that it's a very good pacing mechanic for RP -- but obviously it shouldn't allow people to see who's whispering or who isn't. That's the province of Spot rolls.

I mean it's pretty easy to tell when someone is whispering to someone else irl. Lips moving, leaning towards someone. Immersion wise that would make sense. One should be able to tell the difference between two people having a quiet conversation or if they're staring off mindlessly into space.

Regardless, whisper exception or not, this would be wonderful to have in order to better RP conversations.

It would not be a wise use of server resources. Sometimes simplicity is the best option. We all know it takes a long time to type, as players you can be considerate of your fellow players and give them time to answer.

Something I sometimes do is to end a phrase mid-sentence, using "...". That normally suffices to let others know more text is coming.

Or dev time for that matter; it's not a trivial thing to make work properly.

As someone who in my opinion types slower I would enjoy this addition greatly personally. I think in my opinion it'd be a great addition as a roleplay server first and foremost and increase the RP QoL.

It's not about consideration -- it's about roleplay and immersion. I know it doesn't sound like much, but in my experience it's actually one of those small QoL changes that surprises you with how much it enhances RP and immersion. After all we humans are social creatures who read cues off one another -- except that in the text medium there are no innate cues. That simple icon helps conversations feel more alive and fluid, more real and not like an exchange of text messages.

Can we live without it? Sure. And I don't know what sort of server resources it would require; but I think it's a disservice to the idea to see it as merely a convenience or consideration. I think it's a very useful tool for breathing some life and social cues into the text medium.

There's a rather straightforward and not too obtrusive way to do this. It would look like this when someone is typing:

If that is something we can implement it would be a huge QoL improvement. I hate typing too fast in a reply and another player is still trying to reply to a previous answer.
If system resources will allow for it, I would love to see this sort of thing. Thanks for looking into it!

This looks pretty good! It would be super useful and would help with pacing conversations.

Also IMO whispering also showing the three dots would actually help out when whisper circles form. Atleast that way you know those players are active and makes them easier to approach.

I would like to be able to turn this off. If you type slow and want people to know you are typing - then you can activate this.

It should be absolutely optional to let people know that you are typing. Please make it an @command so we can opt out of this.

Have been wondering about that myself, I've seen some servers literally make it so that if you don't have the language (Or X amount of points in speak language) the text of other players appears as unreadable jargon.

Or at least a mix of 'orc' or 'elf' words pulled from a list to use.

It's not even about that. This is meta information that players can take into consideration. In my opinion, should be treated no differently than LFRP mode.

It's far more meta/cheaty to be able to have full blown conversations with someone and have no outward sign of doing so.

It's far more meta/cheaty to be able to have full blown conversations with someone and have no outward sign of doing so.

The text that appears on your screen, what they are saying, is your outward sign. In my time, people usually emote that they are "whispering in hushed tones". WYSIWYG, sneak on the conversation if you want to know they are talking.

If you want to preemptively let people know that you are about to communicate or emote, great.  Typing text is far more than just conversation, its emotes and descriptors as well. Toggle is the best of both worlds.
