Javeline feats or Weapons Suggestion
« on: September 15, 2023, 09:19:05 PM »
Add a feat that can throw your spear like a javeline but has drawbacks. You can spam throwing spear. But it will cost pc some weight problems and also inventory space.

You throw your weapons and it is auto crit but your weapon will be dropped to that place where you aiming. The feats is if someone was escaping and you have no options, you throw your weapon. Or you throw your reserve weapons to deal crit and lure them.

Or you throw your weapon, but has no crit trigger. You dropped the spear but you increase ac 5 or universal saves +1 because your char enters defensive stance. Just to for emergency.

Last is impaling throw. You throw your spear and the one who got shot has dc to get stunned. For one round or two. Needs discipline for dc checks to counter.

Other suggestion is maybe make a weapon javeline instead. But the feat would be fun. Or cool for spear user rp or trident. Maybe halberd but i dunno if it makes sense for halberd to throw it like javeline.

What do you guys think?

Just addressing each note on it's own here:

Weight is not an issue if you don't let it be. People will optimize something like this with 80% reduction bags and enough strength so, it's not a huge drawback.

Auto-crits are silly and should probably be avoided I would argue. On a spear? A x3 weapon? I'll pass.

Dropping your weapon to obtain some defense seems a bit counter-intuitive? You could use a weapon to parry better. Getting rid of that would do the opposite.

The impaling throw for a stun is a novel concept. I like it. But it again just lends itself to powercreep and such.

Having Javelins as a different throwing weapon could be neat. I don't see why not. But it's asking for a good amount from a Dev who wants to even do such.

Couple problems.

Auto crits in a x3, if you have any rogue in you, is incredibly OP.

Spears are incredibly light, so stacking a bunch of them is only inconvenient as far as inventory management goes

Ranged cheese of a x3 crit weapon in certain dungeons for free xp.

While a ranged throw would be nice for pvp, you also can just swap to a bow, which would overall use less weight and be better for inventory management.  Or use throwing axes which are already in game.  Alchemical throwing axes go brrr

Javalins would be neat for variety and would allow for some interesting concept-builds.  I don't think they should be the same as spears though.  Spears are different from javalins, traditionally shorter and lighter.  If you want to make javalins a thing, I would make them better than a dart, and worse than a spear.  Make it stackable, give it a weight of 1, and 1d6 damage as a thrown piercing weapon, with a size of medium, and a crit of x2.  I would give it a "simple weapon" proficiency like a spear.  This way, it is similar in stats to throwing axes, but the damage type is different and doesn't require martial proficiency.  This would be mostly for flavor, and wouldn't destabilize anything.
