Rental doors auto-closing
« on: August 06, 2022, 06:59:01 PM »
Please turn off this behavior, it is intensely annoying to anyone hosting a public event to have their doors shut and lock because they walked away from them. As I recall this has already been done at the fairgrounds - it should apply to shops and warehouses too. Key holders can be responsible for their own security, we don't need a script managing it for us.

We can do that, however if a door is left unlocked, anyone could walk in and remove or add new placeables. It means that if you log out abruptly and don't have time to lock it when you do, it'll remain unlocked as well. If the majority of rental holders prefer taking that risk, then we can adjust them.

in my experience, in vallaki's warehouse 3, i can keep the door open all day as long as someone remains in the rental.  the system seems to know when to auto-close, at least over here
this also makes it so anyone who logs out in my rental (for whatever reason) can leave and then my door will be closed after they do so
i don't really want to change how it works, because things are working well for me

Remnar's experience is not reflected in Port-a-Lucine. In warehouse 1 we had an auction last weekend wherein whenever any guest entered or left the exterior door would close and lock. When the host would leave the room to fix it the interior door would do the same.

This also happens in Warehouse 3.

How, exactly, could a person add placeables who got in because the door was unlocked? I was under the impression that only the leaseholder could use the system.

Either way, that's a risk inherent in the system. One I'd be willing to accept in exchange for my door staying open when I want it to.

I think EO's referring to candles or placeables added with the carpentry system which don't require you to be a leaseholder.

I'm really not that worried about that, it's no different from locking my door in real life.

Since such change would impact more than one person, I'd rather hear feedback from many more rental owners.

And yes, people can use the carpentry system in your rental, or just destroy placeables, fireball it, etc. We won't start policing who does what in rentals so if they're unlocked, we won't intervene to investigate who might have destroyed a rental.

Would it be possible to add a way to turn that feature on and off in game? It was frankly ridiculous that someone had to go back every time to open doors that would auto-lock during the event.

I can understand the fear that people would break the decorations of rentals, but that should be considered PvP. I would hope we are mature enough as a community to avoid such a thing.

If people are extremely, extremely concerned about their places getting fireballed, they can always set their placeables to plot when designing their space.

Or just lock their doors.

I would be happy with whatever changes making rentals identical to however it is my rental (vallaki warehouse 3) functions.
Which is, of course:
Door does not close when someone enters/leaves, only when EVERYONE was exited the building.
If someone who logged out in the rental logs back in, they can leave but the door closes and locks behind them.

As long as these two functions is what is planned in this case, I think we can all be happy with it.
I don't want someone who logged out of my rental to accidentally (or purposefully) leave my door open when I'm not there.

I held the rental for Warehouse three before Remnar did and i really liked how it worked, if thats how it works in most rentals then keep it how it is. I personally enjoyed that the door closed behind me and locked, and if/when i get another rental i hope its still in place.

I very much like how there's something in place for people who get locked in by accident to get themselves out without involving a DM. That particular functionality seems to be broken in the internal doors of Warehouse 3 in Port when I accidentally spawned in there - maybe there's something weird going on with the warehouses in Lucine?

As a tangent, I would love to see the doors to rentals be pickable / bashable. Players can protect their placeables with the plot tag, and it would make PvP and espionage that happens in rentals less about who happens to have the key to the door, which has flattened a lot of the dynamic intrigue that comes from these situations.

I'm going to be the contrarian here and say I actually like this activity the way it is... with the auto closing/locking of doors.

Sure, it's a minor inconvenience, but we turned it into an RP opportunity.  It's created a lot of stories in my character's shop around it "being haunted."
The looks on many of the Garda's faces who have visited and rolled with it over the years has been priceless.

You should be able to visit the ooc room from within most rentals and teleporting you back should then unlock the door allowing you to escape much like within inn rooms.

The door to my rental also only locks if everyone inside has left. I really like this, to be honest. If it could be applied to all other rentals as well.

Probably an unpopular opinion but my preference would be for rentals to 1) Not have any systems in place that would automate doors or locks and 2) have all locks be vulnerable to open lock.

Hard agree and I'd go one step further and say all hotel rooms as well.  Probably not the thread for that discussion, though.

If the doors are automated it seems a little bit silly that they'd relock themselves.  I can definitely understand doors closing repeatedly during events where people are meant to walk in/out to be super frustrating.

It wouldn't be as frustrating if the doors didn't lock themselves, sure. But they do even when there are a dozen or more guests inside.

I'd rather not have my rentals open lockable when I cant be there around them all day. It's just too open to griefing for my liking.

Can we get some renewed attention on this? Some of the doors on the warehouses in PaL will regularly shut themselves and lock and it stinks. It traps people inside, it prevents people from visiting when the establishment should be open, and it's just generally a big pain.

It is not a big ask for keyholders to manually shut and lock their doors. We do it in reality, it should be so on POTM. No more haunted doors please. :)

Relitigating this. I shouldn't have to re-open my auto-locking front door just because I opened an interior door.

Players who use the rental system should be solely responsible for whether they lock their doors or not, especially now that they can decorate on their own.

As an aside, my door has shut on its own three times today without any movement from my character, so either the auto-shutting script has gotten more aggressive or another character is ignoring my shouts to stop closing the door.

As a property renter in Port, I like how it is. That being said, my preference would be to be able to turn the auto-close/lock on and off as needed, in game per property. @autolock 1 /@autolock 0

We did turn off the auto close/lock function of the ballroom in the Governor's due to this issue as well, extending it to all rentals makes sense.  It's rather disruptive and immersion breaking to deal with the doors.

I wouldn't mind if there was a toggle for this behavior, that'd also be acceptable. I just want to not have to worry about my door being shut and locked during an opening, or if there's an event I hate seeing the host constantly disrupted by having to reopen the door.
