Shaman Items
« on: September 07, 2023, 05:37:00 PM »
We are getting ready to release the class on the test server.

This thread is to discuss/propose new items for the Shaman class, and correct typos in descriptions before they make it to the TLK.
Some though not all, could also be made to work for voodan. Feel free to propose some of your own.

If possible, try to give some D&D setting lore to your descriptions, that's an important function of items. The Nightmare Lands, I'Cath, Sri Raji, and Rokushima Taiyoo are domains where shamans would be known to exist, but you are not limited to these domains, nor to Ravenloft.

If you have existing, class limited, items you think would be a good fit for shaman, list them here as well.

Bo of the Naiad

Quarterstaff
AC Bonus +1
Cast Spell: Bo of Water (3) 5 Charges/Use, 50 charges
Material Wood, Bamboo
Use Limitation: Class: Shaman
Use Limitation: Class: Druid

Value 5132 GP
Intended treasury tr_nature_wondrous

This sturdy bamboo staff of simple design hails from the far away land of Rokushima Taiyoo. The staff is etched with symbols of reverence toward lake and river kami, the spirits that are believed to dwell in all things.

A popular legend links this staff to the Bo of the Naiad, a magical weapon once gifted from a river kami to a young fisherman whom successfully protected a sacred shrine from vile bandits. The naiad promising that in the hands of a true servant of the kami, the might of elemental water could be invoked for protection in times of need. Humbled and thankful for the gift, the young man grew to become a well respected shaman himself and dedicated his life to maintain the shrine. The staff was passed down to his successors. It was lost at the onset of the War of the Shujins when a huge tidal wave swallowed and destroyed the island the shrine was on.

Amulet of the Spirit World

Bonus Spell Slot of Level: Shaman Level 4
Material Unknown
Skill Bonus: Lore +2
Use Limitation: Class: Shaman

Value 5690 GP
Intended treasury tr_holy

Nobody knows what this amulet is made of. All divination attempts fail to identify its composition and spirits are silent about it. It is not from this world and even the wisest of sages are lost in conjectures about it. What is known is that it serves as a conduit for shamans to channel more power from the spirit world into ours, but this comes at a cost and great risks. Spirits agree to create such amulet only when they need some important tasks to be completed themselves.

Most importantly, every shaman knows that taking possession of such amulet is a tacit agreement to take on the burden of completing the spirits' task even though they may not know what it is, nor the kind of spirits it is linked to, when the item is acquired. It is therefore a double-edged sword to wear such necklace. Being immortals, spirits do not conceive time as mortals do. It is possible that a shaman wearing a spirit amulet will live its entire life without knowing what the associated task may be, nor being ever visited by the spirits which created it. But at other times, spirits will manifest and demand their dues. On the Demiplane of Dread, that is rarely a good omen.

Boots of the Brahmin

Bonus Spell Slot of Level: Shaman Level 2
Cast Spell: Ghostly Visage (9) 5 Charges/Use
Decreased Skill Modifier: Concentration -3
Material Leather
Skill Bonus: Discipline +2
Use Limitation: Class: Shaman

Value 5239 GP

In the exotic domain of Sri-Raji, shamans are part of the Brahmin, the highest and most respected class of the society, formed by priests and other spiritual leaders. They are rarely seen by the masses, their station affording them the best commodities and a sheltered life.

These finely crafted leather boots are said to be blessed by the Rajian goddess Rudri. Pairs such as these are occasionally granted to the priests from the city of Muladi when they are required to travel through the dangerous jungle of the domain. Particularly when they are accompanying the Chosen of Kali to the accursed city of Bahru, where the chosen will have the honor of being sacrificed to the Black Mother.

The magic these boots contain allows the brahmin to evade the attacks of dangerous predators and call forth power from the gods and their divine servants. A disconcerting and unnerving presence is felt whenever donning these boots. It is said bad luck is guaranteed to visit anyone blaspheming against the gods while wearing these boots.

Rings such as these are held sacred to worshippers of the Wolf God, the monstrous deity whose faith hold sway over the land of Verbrek. They are carved out of the bones of their prey, consecrated in bloody rituals and bounded with the spirit of a ravenous wolf. Feral shamans invoke the spirit of the ring to help them in their frenzied hunts.

In the numerous Kartakan tales involving Grandfather Wolf, one relates the story of twins, Marisse and Elhard, lost in the woods at night with wolves howling on their trails. The tale of the harrowing night differs from a storyteller to another, but all concur that it was a bloody affair. In most versions, after a whole night of fending off the wolves attacks, a mortally wounded Elhard hands over a ring to his sister promising that he'd always be there to protect her.

Reed Song Heaven Blade

Katana

Damage Bonus vs. Racial Type: Elemental [1d4 Force]
Damage Bonus vs. Racial Type: Fey [1d4 Force]

The Central Land of Reeds refers to the in-between land of Heaven and Hell, where humans live and the Kami make visitations. Shrine festivals held to honour the innumerable tales of the Kami are tradition for the Rokuma people. Many shrines are cared for by non-militant priests, such as the Miko, unmarried virgin priestess of desirable beauty. Beauty, however, lends itself to tragedy, jealousy and murder.

While the origins of these blades remain shrouded in myth, their ability to strike into the unseen world suggests the fixations of Kami are fickle at best, deadly at worst.

The Central Land of Reeds refers to the inbetween land of Heaven and Hell, where humans live and are preyed upon by Oni. Setsubun is a festival held in the late winter, where the Rokuma people ward away the evil of the prior year. Participants don demonic-like masks, while roasted fortune beans are thrown at them to create good luck. There will always be those insincere in attendance, lingering like ichor, hatred in their black hearts wishing for destruction.

While the origins of these blades remain shrouded in myth, their ability to cause suffering is an apt reflection of the blood thirsty Oni.

Immaculate white silk gloves with red cresting waves emanating from gold embroidered dragon claws. The seams are cyclical and feel never ending, each piece of silk swallowing the next. Red ropes encircle the wrist and are tied together across the fore-arm in a spiral, lengths ending in three gemstone beads followed by tassels. Each bead is inhabited by a petty dragon Kami, which a spiritual medium may petition for aid in striking their foe. These dragon Kami will answer only with elemental power, should a request serve their capricious temperaments.

Thank you for the suggestions. A few points to keep in mind.

- A katana is not a weapon they are proficient with. I suggest you redo them as simple weapons.
- I would avoid more saving throw bonus on items. The last crafting nerf was meant specifically to reduce them, it would be counter productive to add more.
- A ST vs sonic penalty is near pointless (almost nothing calls for a sonic ST). I'd increase the damage vulnerability instead.
- I'd prefer not to grant force damage bonuses on weapons. We are still assessing the impacts of that damage type on the server overall. I'd also rather not give more reasons to grind for astral driftmetal.

I'll adapt the gloves into something slightly different but retaining the spirit of the suggestion.

Not to be a contrarian - but don't you think it's actually kind of cool to have items that a base character might not start out proficient in, but can eventually consider his premium choice once he levels up enough to take that feat? Shamans also get extra feats. It's just like a fighter or cleric shelling out for a bastard sword. Feat taxes sting less when you can suddenly make use of a solid item that has cool background lore. This promotes a wider selection rather than just the bare minimum common items with homogenised stats to consider the class playable.
Insatisfait permanent, c'est ša l'apanage du champion.

I am not inherently against the idea but to begin with I'd prefer to focus on items that may be of use to all shamans regardless of their build. Shaman items will be in limited amount to begin with. Right now they only have 2 weapons (if counting the gloves) that are specific to them. Once we'll get this up to cover a fair range of standard options, adding katanas for shamans will be easier to justify.
