Marked potions stacking
« on: July 17, 2023, 03:42:51 PM »
Pretty easy one to explain:
If you have a potion marked with a makers mark, and it stacks with potions that are not, then the resulting potion loses the mark forever.

Since potions autostack with applicable ones when you pick it up, that seems ... a bit annoying.

It should also work the other way around, stacking unmarked potions (and arrows) with a marked one.

While hilarious that too is probably a bug.

While this may be a bug, I think I would go insane if I had to have individual stacks of potions due to various makers marks.

More a quirk than a bug really.

The game engine was never designed for players editing their equipment's descriptions in-game, and it has absolutely no way to make the distinction between different descriptions for a same item. In a nutshell, each item has a resref (resource reference) tag, being the name the system knows the item as. When you stack items that have the same resref it simply adds the newer items to those that were already in your inventory, keeping the description of the original item.

Definitively here to stay like this forever.

Is it possible to make them not stack with existing ones automatically?  It's not the end of the world, but it was a bit annoying to lose potions I had marked that way, since the game stacks them automatically, you can't intentionally keep them seperate (other than keeping stuff in bags, which I hereby deem 'plan B')

The auto-stacking is a consequence of their resref being the same, unfortunately.

There is another annoying bug out there specifically with potion stacking, and it has to do with claimed potions. For some reason, storing potions makes them unstackable with one another quite often, resulting in having to claim and restack, and storing them again. This seems to occur about 80% of the time, for whatever reason. Other claimed crafted things stack no problem, such as varnishes. However stacks of crafted potions do not stack. (Happens with the storage in the drain, specifically)

I couldn't care less about the makers mark being erased, but if using a makers mark fixes this issue I would use it all the time. Any chance this could get looked at?

Are they all crafted?  I ask as crafted potions and non-crafted potions won't stack, even if they are in all elements identical.  Bit of a pet peeve of mine.

Yes, these all 100% crafted potions. They stack when they aren't claimed, but when they are claims they don't.

I have always guessed that is on purpose for all those crafted items, different, very low to sell prices so they are not for selling to vendors.

On that note. Most of the time (though not always), crafted potions and looted ones differ in caster level. So they are purposefully given a different resref hence they are different potions, this is on purpose to avoid an exploit. Looted potions have a gold value that crafted ones do not.

Make Plan B, you plan A to Z. We're definitively not tackling this issue. Note that it can work on your favor too, say you acquire potions from the "competition" it's easy to "pour" the potions into "your" bottles.

I just want to be 100% clear here since everytime I have brought this up it gets conflated with the loot drop potions, these are crafted potions that aren't stacking. It's just very odd that they stack while they aren't in claim form, and they don't when they are claimed. This is a seperate issue than OP has brought up, which is my bad, but since you referenced resref I thought it worth bringing up quick.

Its a somewhat minor quirk in the grand scheme, but adds up significantly when you have hundreds of crafted potions.

Apologies if there was a confusion I was not replying to you specifically.

I know 100% what you are talking about though. It is on the list of things to investigate.

No worries, I admittedly hi-jacked this thread with another issue entirely. For that I apologize. Thank you for taking a look at it, it would be a major blessing if it were fixed.

It just seemed like a bugged behaviour.  I suppose it is!  But not one we can easily fix. I'll deal with it then, if its not something easily fixable.

A bug supposes that a feature is not working as intended, but Bioware just never had to bother with that to begin with. I would not even call it an oversight. Stackable items in the original game never changed description, and for better or worse they scripted the game according to their needs, not our 20 years later needs. We are the ones trying to make it work in way it shouldn't.
