Waking Up

"Ugh, that fall was painful..." I trailed off. It was clear I had fallen, but not from the tree I had been in. "What was this smell and music?"

As I looked around, the injury to my head became apparent. Drums beating in unity with the throbbing pain wracking my skull as a small stream of blood slowly mixed with the rain on my face. The forest I had known for most of my life was gone. Instead, a camp appeared in the distance through the misty fog.

Nothing seemed familiar, neither the wagons which bore strange markings nor the people in colorful clothing that seemed to dwell around. I carefully crept closer, blinking a few times to clear the haze from my vision. Hiding behind a rock I studied the people in further detail, an odd gathering of various races seemed to cluster around a specific person, clearly haggling away low-tier goods.

Before stepping into view, I wrapped a cloth around the marking on my arm, taking care for not everyone would be pleased with my past. Though we were taught to be fierce and vicious in our hunts, cunning and subterfuge were just as important, this was not a time to be reckless.

As I followed some of the seemingly friendly faces, I couldn't help but wonder; could this place be a new hunting ground granted by him? They eventually led me to a run-down church, which evidently functioned as some sort of sanctuary. Inside there were several dirty mats on the floor where people rested, as one of the priests handed out rations to the people, giving me the opportunity to recover some of my strength.

Many of the people residing here would prove to be rather talkative, happily informing me of where I've ended up. They called this land Barovia, and the grey city to the west, Vallaki. I was certain He had blessed me with this new hunt. I would not fail. I would show my devotion through a long slaughter, any victim, deer or man as long as it would please Him.
