A Response to the Marquise of Givrémont

Much like during the political mudslinging that occurred during the lead up to the Captaincy of the Silent Fields Campaign, this will be my one and only response.

It is a well known fact, Madame Marquise, that I do not partake in public debacles of political squabbling.  If you knew anything about me at all - as you seem to claim - you would have known this and known that if you desired a genuine conversation all you had to do was ask, for the one thing I believe in most is the ability and necessity of our nation to unify.

It is interesting, further, that you obsessively attribute qualities and ambition to me that I have never once claimed for myself.  I do not want to be a great man.  I do not want to be a hero in the history books.  I do not want to be remembered for anything more than my unwavering belief in the greatness of Dementlieu, even whilst surrounded by those who seem determined to do nothing more than keep us locked in a cycle of infighting.  Those who, like vultures feeding upon carrion, devour the social, economical, and political issues that plague our nation like a disease.

The sins of the past will never be forgotten, nor should they be.  The Council of Brilliance have already seen to the punishment of those responsible, to the caliber that they deem appropriate.  I, for one, see no reason to question their judgement.  Nor will I speak for them.

I will, however, suggest that the truth of any conflict is rarely ever as black and white as it appears on the surface.  When the soldier is called to fight, when he is drowning in the mud of the battlefield and the blood of friend and foe alike, when he is desperate to protect those he loves, the lines of what it is that is being fought for blur.  I expect, Madame Marquise, that your husband knows this as well as I do.  Deep down, the soldier's heart knows, even if it is obscured by anger and frustration.

It is unfortunate that you came to Port-a-Lucine seemingly intent upon making me your political adversary, if not outright enemy.  There is too much at stake for our future to allow myself to be distracted any more than this letter permits.  I hope that in time you will put aside your anger - or at the very least, direct it towards our real enemies as I do - and perhaps then join me in the pursuit of making our nation shine as it should.  Until then, I wish you all the best in your endeavors.
