The Gearling Night Time Pistol - A Review

Features: Illuminated lens and sighting system that allow for ease of use in low light conditions. Helps with investigating dark areas and target identification.

Weight : ~ 3 pounds

Reliability: Poor. I am uncertain if we merely received a defective example, or the design itself is in some way flawed. We experienced on average 25-35 malfunctions over 100 rounds. These reliability issues disqualify it for duty use and relegate it to realms of a novelty until addressed.

Market Availability: Very Good. Monsieur Gearling seems to possess a surplus of the Night Time Pistol. It appears he has crafted some method for producing this special glass en mass.

Value: Below Average. Monsieur Gearling charges more than 8,500 solars for these examples. We were unable to find any second hand examples and I suspect this may have something to do with quality control issues.

Opinion: There are a couple of issues with the Night Time Pistol outside of its poor reliability. First, from a design standpoint, you have to aim through the sights to take advantage of the illuminated lens. This means that you're pointing your weapon at something or -someone- you haven't appropriately identified as a threat. A primary light source is an absolute must if one is to consider using this pistol to first determine the nature of the threat, and then and only then, take advantage of its unique system. I'll revisit this example if Monsieur Gearling is able to rectify the reliability issues. It may yet have some purpose as a sentry's side arm.

The Helling and Son Fidelis Pistol - A review

Features: A crisp sight picture that uses the "notch and post" style of sighting system. Simple, robust, and accurate. Electrum lined barrel nearly eliminates corrosion related misfires. Flawless reliability with nearly one thousand rounds fired.

Weight: 3 pounds

Reliability: Excellent. By using advanced metallurgy Helling and Son have truly made a weapon you can bet your life upon. It incorporates many of the advantages afforded by the "Gearling Risk Free Pistol" (review coming soon!) while shoring up some of its weaknesses- namely weight and accuracy.

Market Availability: Perhaps the greatest weakness of the Fidelis is the difficulty in getting your hands on one. A lack of local retailers means that should you decide this is the weapon for you, you'll be looking at the second hand market. "Used Guns" can be perfectly fine. I'd like to believe that all firearms owners are as zealous as I when it comes to cleaning and lubrication after a use. However, in the real world this means that some owners are going to care less for their belongings than you. If you pick one of these up, ensure you visit a qualified gunsmith and have its bore for signs of excessive wear, springs for strength and hammer for lock up.There is no sound louder than a click when you're expecting a bang and none more tragic than a bang when you're expecting a click,

Value: Very Good. Lest you're reading this in Lamordia, the second hand market will give a modest discount to any purchase. Granted, depreciation on firearms is very low, you will save yourself a solar or two from purchasing this off a friend or relative. Please avoid unscrupulous dealers. You get what you pay for.

Opinion: This is an excellent choice for novice shooters and professionals alike. It's near peerless reliability, accuracy and affordable price point give you lots of room to grow and develop as a shooter. If Helling and Son can straighten out their logistics issues, Gearling's got competition.
