Rumors travel swiftly that shortly after a mock trial that ended in shouting, two young women were taken suddenly ill. A doctor, and the gendarme were called upon suspicion of poisoning.... if someone were to inquire deep enough, the identities of the victims would easily be discovered: Madeleine Voland, and Stella Seifert.

The chess game between Sieur Dorian de Sauvre and the Falkovnian Ambassador Hermann von Wittendorf was played at the expected hour, drawing a considerable crowd. Perhaps unexpectedly, the Ambassador chose the black pieces, putting the onus on Sieur Dorian to attack with the white, and defend the honour of the Republic...

Spoiler: show

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5

The Vorostokov Opening! Another unexpected choice by the Ambassador, he chooses to leave his King's pawn open to capture in exchange for a very aggressive defence. The best move for white here is to take the proffered pawn, and Sieur Dorian does this.

3. ... Nxe4 4. Qe2 d5 5. d3 f6 6. Qh5+

The Ambassador continues with his highly aggressive defence but is the first to expose a weakness, letting the Queen into the flank to check the King along the diagonal!

6. ... g6 7. Nxg6 Bb4+

Ever dispensing with conventional defence, the Ambassador ignores the Knight about to take his Rook and goes on the offensive.

8. Nc3 Bxc3+ 9. bxc3 Nxc3

Black has a Knight in an advanced and dangerous position, but has now left himself open to a possible counterattack.

10. Nxh8+ Kd7 11. Qxh7+ Kc6 12. Bd2 Qe8+

The moment Sieur Dorian almost lost the game! Here, blundering 13. Be2 leads to losing directly with Qxe2#. Fortunately for Dementlieu, he plays the correct move...

13. Be3 d4 14. Qh6 dxe3 15. Qxf6+ Qe6 16. Qxc3+ Kd7 17. Qd4+ Kc6 18. Qe3 Qxe3+ 19. fxe3

Black captures the Bishop through a pin only for White to capture his advanced Knight with a check. Sieur Dorian then retreats his Queen to defend the King, offering an exchange, which Black accepts. Once the smoke clears, Black's attack is completely spent, and White has a considerable material advantage.

19. ... Nd7 20. g3 Ne5 21. Bg2+ Kd6 22. d4 Bf5 23. dxe5+ Kxe5 24. Nf7+ Kf6 25. O-O Kxf7 26. Rxf5+ Ke6 27. Raf1 Re8

The game is now hopeless for Black, but the Ambassador fights on to the bitter end, as Falkovnians are wont to do.

28. R5f4 Rd8 29. Re4+ Kd5 30. Rd4+ Ke5 31. Rxd8 Ke6 32. Rf4 Ke5 33. Re4+ Kf5 34. Rf8+ Kg5 35. h3 Kg6 36. Rg4+ Kh6 37. Rh8#

Final position at checkmate.

Sieur Dorian wins it! Victory for Dementlieuse honour, then; even if it was only a "friendly" game...
