Zinlys Zouria Zarella - An Elegy For Who?
« on: February 28, 2022, 02:28:10 PM »
Here lies the journal of a Gnome.  One Zinlys Zouria Zarella.  The pages in this little book are mostly torn out or scribbled over, but from time to time pristine words shine through.

Quote
Sour, dour, and a downright displeasure.
Words from another.
Words truly like no other.
To handle it? I'd stooped to a Liquid-measure.

I'm not much of a fighter.
But damnit, you hit me where it hurts the most.
Right in the feelings.

Hold my guard tighter, my quill quieter, my heart higher.
Feet apart, head down. Strike with the pinky and ring finger.
I learned it all from you.

So thanks for teaching me.
For helping me.
I can't help it though.  Being sour, and dour.

I know I'm a downright displeasure.
But I'm glad you said it.  A lesson just for me.

Words from my Mother.
Truly, you were like no other.
And for you, I'll spill a liquid-measure.
Cause you being gone hit me where it hurt the most.
Right in the feelings.

Love you Mom.

In a candlelit room lies a sleeping form.  Before it on the table is an open, worn and creased journal.  Our point of view moves closer while an invisible wind flips the journals pages. Stopping on a newfound entry.

Quote
On Swords and Steeds.

To arms! To arms!

A beast, mighty and strong!
Luminous in night, never sleeping.
Behold its brilliance.

The beast chews them up. Ceaselessly hungry!
With rows of knives in its lying mouth.
A hundred eyes and six sinister heads.

To arms! To arms!

Take up your sword Sir Knight.
Plumed and stained black.
Oh Knight of Quills, take up your sword.

None can pierce its hide, adamantine.
No, this beast must die from inside.
So get chewed up Sir Knight, be consumed!

To arms! To arms!

Plunge yourself straight into its Maw!
Take your ink-black blade. Remove its liars knives!
Starve the beast! Starve the beast!

They wait for you, Knight of Quills.
The call, The sign, against this toothless beast.
They wait for just two words.

To arms! To arms!

The writing seemed hard pressed into the journal.  The words had been scratched out multiple times before finally landing their mark.

Quote
Ash.

A lit cigarette, ashen desire.
How deeply I breathed you in.
One match struck out, one match to win.
Burn these lips cigarette, set them on fire.

Well played ashen desire.
You got what I wanted.
Twice now, all pretty you flaunted.
I'd congratulate, but I don't do satire.

So my lips are burned, and sealed away.
I'll keep my thoughts and heart at bay.
Enjoy yourself little ashen desire.
Afterall, its your romantic funeral-pyre.

And with that, this cigarettes spent.
Tossed out with the others it went.
I'll just strike another match.
Actually, screw you.

The words of the journal reveal themselves under the unmistakable rhythm of a stressed cigarette.

Quote
Its a treacherous walk through the Ouvrier, the ratways...

How foolish that I was, worried of being monetarily robbed.  The journey is not minacious in that sense.  Well, perhaps it is...  However this time it was my thoughts that have been stolen.

Ceaselessly I think of those people, lying in the filth.  Living spectres of lives gone.  There are too many to know, too many to hear and see.  Lightless eyes and hopeless words.  Burning their last few things to keep warm in broken homes.

We honor the dead with rest, with memories and thoughts.  These people have been buried alive in a crypt with no one to honor them.

It could be fixed.  But how?  What role do I play in it?  What difference could I possibly make?

Maybe I'll just write about them once they're dead.  Its much safer that way.

A corkless champagne bottle rattled across the floor.  Its insides fizzing in a bubbling hiss around it.  The journal lie haphazardly open on a table, the writing stained with the drink.

Quote
Untaxxed and Untariffed

POP!

With the sabre the cork flew off!
That menace is dead, its time for celebration!
The crime? Sale of wine without tariff, without taxation!
With the sabre the head flew off!

pop...

Like a red champagne, a sanguine celebration.
That poster-man who was hungry. Whom had no other choice.
Hunted down, butchered, no story to voice.
His family unawares, his boy... Another case of starvation.

But that menace is dead, good riddance I say!
We'll all drink this champagne, it's called "Justice Charade."
We'll keep the untaxed untariffed liqours at bay!
Well, except this bottle. This ones his last I'm afraid.

Death was his verdict. By local sword swingers.
The same for murderers, and rapists, and trade tongue song-singers.

I hope when you next sabre their heads, akin to champagne.
That it ruins your dresses, as you've no morals to stain.

The journal was absent from the scene, instead a folded note in a dark room was seen instead.  An unseen breeze conveniently opened the words to our view.

Quote
Snake in the grass, why bare your fangs?

It is not for you, that the guillotine hangs.

You look to me with such disdain.

You do not know who this blade will pain.

So I ask again, serpent.

When you look to me, perpent.

How did you miss my slitted eyes.

My forked tongue, and scaley hides.

It's not for you this guillotine hangs.

It's for the ones you bare your fangs.

The sound of raindrops danced in applause as our view of the journal came forth through a curtain of shadow.

Quote
Just like that.

There are many stars in the night sky.

Those astute will note, there's one more to spy.

Between hope, and wonder.  That star will shine.

She'll look back down.  I'm sure they know.

Our city does everything to copy her glow.

I miss you my friend, life's one shade darker.

I'll keep my eyes at your skybound marker.
