Red Wizard PRC
« on: December 31, 2021, 09:59:56 PM »
Since we've got a whole nation of Red Wizards available, and people able to actually join the faction. Any chance on seeing the Red Wizard prc implemented?

I recall PRC had it basically 100% working back in the day (though it completely disables spell-casting if you have any other class besides Wizard and Red Wizard), including Circle Magic (though I never really had the chance to dick around with that since I was always playing around with it solo, though it allegedly worked).

Race: Human (and/or planetouched if using Races of Faerun rules, which I vaguely recall you are (due to Half-Drow not getting Darkvision like in 3.0 FRCS rules))

(Since we're not in Thay, we'll replace that requirement with the application process and requiring membership with the Red Academy for entry, since the Head of your Chosen Specialization will decide if you've got what it takes to become a true Red Wizard).

Alignment: Non-Good
Spellcraft 8 Ranks
Required Feats: Tattoo Focus, any spell focus, any greater spell focus, spell penetration. (this list is more flexible in P&P (any combination of 3 item creation or meta-magic feats in addition to Tattoo focus).
Spell-casting: Ability to cast 3rd level spells as a Specialist Wizard.

(Notes on Tattoo Focus. Tattoo focus can be selected as a feat at first level only (must be human and wizard (and if possible to check for a specialist) (iirc it works similar to spell focus and you need to pick your school of specialization, which grants you a +1 to dc and +1 spell pen for that school and stacks with all similar bonuses). Alternatively, a character that decides to pursue becoming a Red Wizard later, can receive the tattoo focus feat for free from any 7th+ Red Wizard (Must be Human/Planetouched and a Wizard or it fails), which also allows that character to participate in Circle Magic rituals.

(could also include some OCR effects based on having Tattoo focus due to it's Mulan/Thayan/Hazlani connection).

Class Skills: Influence (bluff), Antagonize (intimidate), Concentration, Lore (knowledge(all)), Spellcraft. (Not Used: Craft/Profession)

Skill Points: 2 per level + int modifier.

(Save and BAB progress same as a Wizard)

Spell per day: Red Wizards gain new spells per day and caster level as if they'd advanced in their base spell-casting class, but does not get any other benefits (such as class specific bonus feats, etc).

Level 1:
Enhanced Specialization (Red Wizards are required to select 2 Prohibited School feats, 1 should match your default prohibited school and one new school to lose to represent your increased focus on your school of specialization. You retain the ability to cast any spells you knew prior to accepting the extra restricted school but cannot learn any more of them. I forget exactly why they set it up this way, though it might've been proof against generalist wizards taking the class by forcing them to lose a total of two schools since I don't think you could check for specialist as a PRC or feat requirement).

Enhanced Specialist defense +1 (+ saves vs your school)

Level 2: Enhanced Specialist Power +1 (+ DC/spell Penetration).

Level 3:  Enhanced Specialist defense +2

Level 4: Enhanced Specialist Power +2

Level 5: Circle Leader (Can lead a circle of up to 5 total participants), Bonus Feat (Wizard)

Level 6: Enhanced Specialist Power +3

level 7: Scribe Tattoo Focus, Enhanced Specialist defense +3

Level 8: Enhanced Specialist Power +4

Level 9: Enhanced Specialist defense +4

Level 10: Enhanced Specialist Power +5, Great Circle Leader (Can lead a circle of up to 10 total participants).

---------------------------------------------

Circle magic rituals:

Each participant must use their Link to Leader ability (granted by the tatoo focus feat), by targeting a Circle Leader or Great Circle Leader who is in Circle Casting Mode. once linked (maximum of 4 links for a Circle Leader, 9 links for a greater circle leader), each participant can cast 1 wizard spell which will be absorbed and grant the Circle Leader Circle Levels equal to the spell level sacrificed. These circle levels can then be spent on circle abilities. Circle Levels persist for 24 hours or until the caster's next rest.

Activating Circle Casting Mode while having Circle levels or buffs will immediately end their effects.

Circle Abilities (requires Circle Leader or Great Circle Leader feat to access):

Circle Meta-magic Modes: (only 1 mode can be activated at a time).

Circle Extend (costs 1 circle level per spell cast), Extends any spell cast if possible
Circle Empower (costs 2 circle levels per spell cast), Empowers any spell cast if possible
Circle Maximize (costs 3 circle levels per spell cast), Maximizes any spell cast if possible
Circle Quicken (costs 4 circle levels per spell cast) Quickens any spells cast if possible

Modes cannot be activated (and will automatically end after spell cast) if there are insufficient circle levels remaining for it's cost.

Circle Caster Buffs: (say the amount and use the ability to spend levels)

Increase Spell Penetration (1 circle level per spell penetration bonus). Lasts 8 hours.

Increase spell power (1 circle level per DC bonus), affects next harmful spell cast. (lasts 8 hours or until used)

Increase Spell damage (1 circle levels per bonus dice), next harmful spell deals 1d6 magic damage per bonus dice on the first target struck. (lasts 8 hours or until used).

Obviously Circle magic is extremely complicated (even if it does massively and tangibly add value to master-apprentice mage roleplays) and it'd be fully understandable if you didn't want to implement it, though I'd recommend giving Red Wizards a +5/+10 bonus respectively to Enchanting in place of the Circle Leader feats if you choose to leave it out, since Red Wizards are extremely famous for their skill and proclivity at crafting magical items and they're are denied all of the magic item crafting feats they'd normally be taking.

This is a cool PRC, and I would love the tattoo focus as a fun option. Personally I find it fitting for Hazlan.

However! There is only 1 Red Wizard in ravenloft and that is Hazlik. and the ravenloft DMG says this sadly:

Quote
The Red Wizard Prestige Class is not available in Ravenloft, as the class belongs only in the Forgotten Realms setting, published by Wizards of the coast. If a Red Wizard finds his way into Ravenloft, he is unable to gain any more levels as a Red Wizard until leaving the setting. He cannot access any powers from circle magic. Finally the dark powers are almost certain to be immediately interested in a Red Wizard's doings.
