What:
You use the potion of negative energy, steps into a negative trap and gets str drain anyway

Recreate:
Drink the negative energy potion and activate the negative trap.

No, your potion and spell just don't do what you think they do on this server.

Negative Energy Burst always drains strength regardless of the save.
Negative Energy Protection does not give you Immunity to Level/Ability drain here, just 50% negative energy immunity and +20 to negative energy saving throws.

So traps set up to drain strength or mimic negative energy burst are still going to drain you. You'll need something more potent like Shadow Shield, or some lesser restoration potions to fix things post-trap. Or rest / disable the trap.

The spell is deviated from the base game.

If Im not mistaken the issue is more that the save against the traps isn't considered save vs negative energy, so you wont even get the bonus against them (even though the dmg will be halved)

Indeed, traps are their own thing, and only saves vs traps would work in this situation.
