The Legend of the Cassowary
« on: December 22, 2021, 03:35:02 PM »
Long ago, there lived a man.  A Spanish explorer in a strange new land, stalking one of the mightiest of prey, the Cassowary.  As he trudged through the thick underbrush, mist so thick he could hardly find his way, much less keep track of the flightless bird.  Pulling himself from the weeds and into a clearing, he encountered something entirely new.  A woman, with strange features and pointed ears, stood before him.  An Elf.  For he was no longer in the strange land of New Guinea, but in the even stranger land of the mists.

"Who are you, and what of the Cassowary I have tracked for all of the day and most of the night" asked the man.
"I am I.  What is this Cassowary you speak of?" replies the elf.
"The largest of creatures in this land.  A bird so fierce as to kill a man with a single blow." responds the man.

The elf knew not of the Cassowary, and the man knew not of the existence of dragons.

So when the elf asked "Surely you jest, a dragon would be far larger than this bird you track."
The man, who knew of the existence of only one dragon, the Komodo Dragon, assured the elf "Nay, a bird so large as to tower over even the biggest dragon, with legs so strong as to stomp out its life in a single blow."

Little is known what became of the elf.  Less is known of what became of the man.  Endure, has the image of a fierce bird, towering over an Ancient dragon, its impenetrable scales pierced by the talons of the impossibly enormous bird.  The Cassowary.

While the truth is long dead.  The legend of the bird that preys on dragons lives on.  Escaping mist, it found an unlikely home.  A noble family blessed by the sudden arrival an Elf woman who brought with her fortune and favor in all of the family's pursuits.  In return, she requested a child.

And thus was born Eliza Cassowary, the first of her name, named after the bird that preys on dragons, and half-sister to Sylvie Cassowary nearly 200 years removed.

Here lies a small but thick book full of information for newly-joined noble-born military officers.  Whoever the original author is, is unknown.  However, it is clear where their priorities lie, with the first over 400 pages full of critical information such as:

"Etiquette of Dining: Specifications and Use of Fine Cutlery, Silverware, Flatware, Glasswear" (60 pages)
"Customs and Courtesies: Behavior When in the Presence of a Superior Enemy Officer While Captured by the Enemy" (27 pages)
"Uniforms: Proper Wear and Maintenance of Formal Ball and Dress Uniforms while Attempting to Evade Capture" (47 pages)

Strategy, tactics, and anything related to leading men into battle are an afterthought relegated to the last 12 pages.

A substantial number of blank pages pad out the length of the book.  Here, on those blank pages, is where the journal of Sylvie Cassowary can be found.
