Suggestion : Improved Natural Attack
« on: March 31, 2021, 12:21:15 PM »
This might be an interesting feat to add, with some modifications:

Improved Natural Attack ( Monster Manual III, p. 206)

The natural attacks of a creature with this feat are more dangerous than its size and type would otherwise dictate.

Prerequisite
base attack bonus +4

Benefit
The damage for one of the creature's natural attack forms increases by one step, as if the creature's size had increased by one category.

Anyone who's not a monk could perhaps have their unarmed strikes improved to a 1d4? 1d6?

If the character IS a monk, however? Why not make it so that their unarmed advancement is one grade higher then their level should give?

Like this:
Original Damage dice ==> New damage dice

(Damage taken from level 5, which is the earliest it can be taken on Monk)

Large/Medium
1d8 ==> 1d10
1d10 ==> 1d12
1d12 ==> 1d20
1d20 ==> 3d8

Small
1d6 ==> 1d8
1d8 ==> 1d10
1d10 ==> 2d6
2d6 ==> 1d20

This way, Monks who invest in this feat have their own, similar version of Greater Weapon Specialization (Unarmed)....And it would perhaps make people willing to break away from pure Monk and try out prestige class combos?

Also, perhaps even have some more smaller subraces being monks?

Anyway, just a thought, not sure if it's feasible, even.

It's a feat that is only used by monsters, intended for their bite/slam type creature weapon attacks, its not a player feat. The prerequisite includes Natural Weapon, and can only be selected for one of those creature weapons, ex Improved Natural Attack (Claw)

It also likely isn't feasible since unarmed attacks, with monks, are tied to the actual creature size of the creature.

Maybe monstrous races could get access to weapon specialization (creature weapon) for something similar in damage, it'd be easier for the monk to just find the weapon specialization (unarmed strike) item that would give them a small damage bump.

I was aware it was meant for monsters, the term 'Monster Manual' did tip me off! Hence why I said it needed modifications.

There are actual monk feats I could suggest, but those tend to fall in the 'ghastly underpowered' or the 'terribly overpowered' category.

Feasibility.....Not too sure, actually. Depends on if the creature size/damage die thing is haredcoded or not, and how much adjustment would need to be done to make it work.

You make a good point about the weapon specialization thing, though! As Monks can already find it on an item, why not make that particular feat chain ( Greater Weapon Focus, (Greater) Weapon Specialization) for monk weaponry a reality for monks?

monks don't really need to be stronger and if this feat is given to a druid it would make there animal forms even stronger as well, Gets into power creep territory.

would be more interesting to see a PRC what any class could take that focus around unarmed fighting.
