[Throughout the Land of Mists..]
« on: January 30, 2021, 12:05:43 PM »
[Throughout the Land of Mists, terrible embankments of fog roll into the slums and darkened alleyways of cities all over. With them, they bring terrible horrors and monstrous creatures of legend. In countries with philosophies of positivism and rationalism, far removed from the superstitious nonsense spouted off by the uneducated masses in provincial realms, these things are written off as mass hallucinations, trauma from the witnesses, and unexplained weather phenomena that nonetheless can be explained by natural philosophers, given time and greater context.

However, in other places, the threat posed by the Mists and their misbegotten manifestations is taken most seriously. In Briggdarrow, the fey and their conspirators are quickly blamed for the strange happenings and the Tepestani Inquisition hold a series of trials for the alleged 'witches', with burning soon to follow. In Bergovitsa, the local Church of the Lawgiver declares this the work of Mytteri and works with the Rivtoff and Vistin families to punish lawbreakers and heretics harshly.

Yet fewer speak louder than the Fourth Revelation, their words suddenly vindicated by the bold and brazen movements of the Mists of Death and the Legions of the Night. Despite their defeat at Karg against the Eternal Order and its Sentinels, they ready themselves for yet another fight, this one not against men but instead against great beasts that the Legions of the Night have as their vanguard...]

“He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."

- Edgar Allen Poe, "The Masque of the Red Death"
