Barovia to Vallaki - Ogre Mages - overkill
« on: November 12, 2020, 05:48:48 PM »
Please can the ogre mages that spawn between the village of Barovia and the Midway Haven be moved out of the way of the path a litte? The reason I ask is because I was with another player, a group of 6 players had ran past us both and crossed the Bridge over the river Tser just two minutes earlier, as we both headed down the path to travel to Vallaki together, an Ogre mage (or three, not sure, I didn't even see it) appeared from no where and blasted us dead instantly.

I don't know if the group that had passed us two minutes earlier had killed the ogres or not, I had assumed due to the size of the group they would have, and that me and the other player could have gotten past without having to OOC run past them and drag them somewhere else.

It's no fun trying to get past these things, especially if you had to travel back from the village of Barovia after a New Character Event, these things are total over kill.

Wouldnt they be better deeper into the woods, so if you want to encounter them then you have to go find them?

You can run past, Stealth past, invis Past and thats if you want to be leaving. The ogres act like a level barrier everything past them is worse.

I am going to give my own thoughts on this;

The path to Mist Camp/VoB is supposed to be hard, full of monsters along the way, and especially not for low levels. A simple invisibility spell from a level 3 mage however cancels out every danger. The road is not supposed to be safe. Those things are not just there for you to kill them and get EXP, but also make you fear travelling unprepared, alone, especially at night. So putting them away wouldn't make any sense. We already have the boat in general to make the path faster and quicker, that too, and we'd see level 2s at Mist Camp! Which is not how things are supposed to be. This server is trying to enforce a sense of being weak no matter the level, and is a gothic horror server after all.

Though, when you get used to the map you'll see how to avoid them.
Spoiler: show
Even if you don't have invisibility, those guys are not good at ranged attacks if you don't have 8 hp like a level 2 Wizzie. They will do 1-2 to 8 damage max until you run past them. There are many shortcuts to take on the map to avoid melee combat or AOOs as well.
Long live the Count, Strahd von Zarovich XI!

Normally they're quite predictable, it's one of the things I dislike about that particular hazard.

But yes, when someone runs past and makes them pre-buff for a group that's actually threatened by them, bad stuff happens.

Still, as others have said above, there's ways past them, but that road is not supposed to be a leisurely walk. It's in the shadow of Castle Ravenloft and there are, indeed, worse enemies lying in wait to ambush people on the road all around that area.

I don't think it's a great thing that you had to go back after NCE as a low level, and run into that "level barrier" -- but we've all had our harsh lessons and embarrassing instakills before. This one, at least, you have some measure of control over, with all the options you do have to get past them even as a low level, and you'll probably never have this happen to you again.
Insatisfait permanent, c'est ça l'apanage du champion.

That path is pretty well travelled, so even if you die its not a big hassle. Furthermore, as others have said, its there to create a sense of dread and make you fear making the trip from vallaki to the village of barovia until you are ready.

Well I would not have objected to running into worgs, or goblyns, or werecreatures, or anything else. What was frustrating is being jumped by a bunch of ogre mages that a party of 6 ran past two minutes earlier, being insta killed by a cone of cold, and then having both our corpses stolen by another who player who we believed ate them for some temporary boost . I then spent hours trying to find our corpses, gave up, and then re spawned and ended up right back in the mist camp with no gold.

If we had been able to see the mob we could have at least stood a chance, but having someone else's invisible orgre mages gank you because a party of 6 is too lazy to fight there own spawns is dumb, especially seeing as they have wizard levels.

That is some serious bad luck. I think the cannibalism and corpse hiding is the bigger problem here.

If you think your body was moved, and eaten, by another player without you opting in, that sounds like a rule break, and you should consult a DM about it.

As for the ogres, I'd say they are fine, and working as intended.  Pay for an escort maybe, or invest in some means of see invisibility if you're concerned about them.

Well I spent 4 hours trying to contact a DM to get us both help, but there were none online. Frankly I couldn't care less if our corpses got eaten, as long as we had been able to get some help, but we were not able to get any.

If you cant find a DM online, post in the generic request thread. The DMs are usually very prompt about logging in and helping, if you post that you are stuck like this.

If you suspect a rule break, it's better to hit them up on Discord through private messages, or send them a direct message on the forums.
