To the Vallaki Garda

[A trio of cheap papersheets are tacked onto the more massive tree near the Lady's Resting Place. Copies of them find themselves near the gates to the Citadel and close to the guardhouse in the slums.]

TO THE VALLAKI GARDA:

~ - ~

I ask you plainly, what do you hope to gain from this? Some small bit of authority, a morsel of power? Do you believe you help, rather than harm, the people you hope to protect? Do you honestly think that by having sworn an oath to the Count, to the brother of the heinously evil butcher Vladimir and the viper Nadia, you are somehow acting honorably?

Let me share with you what an honorable life in service to the Count and his lackeys earns you, in the end.

Constanta Lazarescu. A month ago, she was the Steward of Krofburg. She served her people and her lord honorably and was slavishly devoted to both. She was a firm believer in the rule of law and in seeing justice meted out to villains and criminals.

However, when the former Burgomaster found himself replaced on the Count’s whim by his greedy and power-hungry varlet of a brother, Constanta Lazarescu, despite being quite heavily pregnant, was arrested and sentenced to summary execution. There was no stay for the sake of her unborn children, who would have been innocent of the charges Edoard saw fabricated. The new Burgomaster, in his wisdom, decided they had to die too.

Fortunately for Constanta and her unborn children, that was not to be her fate. Rather than follow this vile man’s sickening orders, once-Lance Corporal Stefan Raducan of the Krofburg Garda chose to defy him. Her subordinate and best friend, one Morrigan Harding, chose to defy him. Instead of acting as the craven would, they showed bravery and stood up against injustice.

Those among you who serve Vallaki, its Burgomaster, the Count… do you truly believe you won’t receive the same treatment, in the end? In their eyes, you are all expendable. Once you have outlived your usefulness, an identical fate to what Constanta Lazarescu was given awaits you. Will you be lucky, as she was, or will you find that the headsman who you once ordered to execute so many others before you finds you on the chopping block instead?

Leave the Citadel. Leave the Vallaki Garda behind you. It is the way of cowards to follow orders blindly. What is truly brave is to object to cruelty, to cruel men, and recognize a need to be better. Find something to wash away the stain on your soul. Be better. Live full lives away from those who would only wish to see it thrown away.
