Leveling Problem

The Ballad:
Trying to get a new character to level 2, the level-up cancels with the message 'This character has invalid skill ranks,' regardless of where I put them.

I tried relogging, and my (previously empty) level up skill list now seems to have the points from my background (2 ranks here and there) inserted in it, like so:

Note that I haven't put any points in spellcraft- or anything, actually, nor can I raise it above the usual 5 for a level 2 character. The crossclass ones cannot be raised at all.

What do I do here?

If it's a new character I suggest recreating it. I've found the issue that caused it, which was related to the changes to skill ranks.
