This concerns the placeable chests you can purchase from Ciprian Murnu's shop, not the chests and crates that can be built with the portable carpentry kit.
Unlike with the crafted placeables, if you don't have room in your inventory when you recover the chest, what items can't fit inside your inventory are instead eaten. Therefore, do not use these or if you do, take the items out of the chest first.
