Better Forum Support for Novelty Accounts
« on: September 02, 2018, 03:32:22 PM »
Is there any chance at all we might see the forums revamped to better support the need for some people to have 'anonymous' or novelty accounts through which to post? As it stands, you've got to register a brand new email and then a new forum account every time you want to do it.

Unfortunately, SMF is pretty set in what it does, and rewriting it breaks compatibility with future updates. We can't change the security settings, either, for obvious reasons. Perhaps someone could write and maintain a plugin allowing posting anonymously by registered users, but then again, that would have to be maintained in perpetuity. The present system works without too many drawbacks.

You could recruit an extra member to the CC and make their duties strictly dealing with anonymous posts for others. Players who wish to post anonymously can then write up the post they want published and send it to this CC member along with the thread they want it posted in, which then gets posted for them when time permits. Alternatively, you realize that you can change the display names of your existing accounts, right? Presumably you're only really known by one of them so if you have an alternate one you're not using for the forums anymore, just change its display name.
