Suggestion: Specialist wizards
« on: April 08, 2018, 05:21:59 AM »
Hi!

I am just throwing here some ideas, maybe they have already been discussed previously...

Right now choosing a school of specialization for a wizard is mainly a drawback i think, maybe we could find a way to add more flavour to different kind of specialist wizards.

Some ideas could be:

-Granting Arane defense (School) for free and giving specialists acces to Epic Spell focus to a certain level.

-Make them cast some particular spells as they were Empowered/Extended

-Adding particular items usable only by specialist (maybe specifing it in the desription if the engine doesn't permit that)

-Making them able to perform particular actions in game

As i said these are just ideas...so take this post easily :)

Yes it is a draw back because the school speacilisation is utter garbage, it's always been regrettable that when they made Neverwinter Nights they didn't adhere to the wizard speacialisations in standard D&D, it's unlikely we would be able to fix this, I'm not sure if many work arounds would be feasible though and anything we gave to a wizard of a particular school might throw things to far off balance.

The problem is that wizard is arguably far and away the strongest class in the game.  Making them stronger, even to make up for the 'shortcomings' of going specialist (especially 'this' strong) sounds more than a little overboard.

I don't think the "arguably" is even needed, wizards just flat are the strongest class, I can't even express how much I disagree with any further buffs to them.

Specialists aren't even that bad, they certainly dont need any buffs. Yes, you give up a spell school, but you get one more cast/circle, which isn't nothing. With the nerfs to Timestop and greater sanctuary, wizards are in a reasonably good spot right now. Buffing them seems counter intuitive.

Specialisation has always been in a weird spot in NWN. You can be an illusionist and lose nothing of real importance, or you take another specialisation and gimp yourself hard. It would be nice if there were some way to make the other specialisations more appealing but I don't think that's realistic.

If I were to touch anything with spellcasters in general, it would be to add little bonuses to otherwise useless spell foci such as increased dispel resistance with abjuration foci, as just one example.

i like this idea. It's true, the mage is so poweful. But is not fair that the mage is allowed to use all the spell with practically no drawback, its like a fighter able to use all the weapons in deep technics, if you must specialize in a weapon when you use weapons, why the mage have the feature to use all the spells with freedom? is not fair. May be, discuss this could make more diverse the mages because are all  equal. I think that a specialist mage should count as the next magic circle in his specialization and a drawback of -6 in concentration when casting as a generalist, except necromancy muahahahahha*evil laugh*.Think this you can use all the spells, thats so powerful.
