Ravenloft Random Character Name Generator
« on: March 07, 2018, 11:05:08 AM »
After a lot of frustration on my part and a lot of gracious help from tzaeru, I'm pleased to announce that we've taken my randomizer libraries (that handle name and appearance randomization within the module itself) and married them with a new external site to make your character generation that much easier. Although it's not entirely finished, and there are almost certainly bugs to work out, I now invite you to visit the working site here: http://www.tzaeru.com/arawn/

Please let me know if you find any bugs or issues, or if you have any suggestions for new features. The program is very straightforward and the interface likewise, but I anticipate there will be a few more kinks to work out before we can consider it final.

Could use Forfarian and Thaani names as well, but it's pretty cool so far.

It is pretty neat, do you plan to add names for the rest of the domains too?

Just make some suggestions. Whatever's most suggested will get added, at least here, and possibly in-game too.

As far as I know, that's the same list as Blaustein or Dementlieu.

Do you intend on adding Invidian names?

Awesome tool. But why are you giving Italian names to Borcans? They speak Balok and come from the same ethnic stock as Barovians. They should have romanian sounding names as well for the most part.

I'll double check once back home. But Balok IS definitively Borca's first language.

I did give some thought as to how to make them “different” and not too stereotypically Italian. So I’ve used medieval Venetian and Romanian names mixed.

I just figured they were close enough to Barovian names. But looking at the examples it seems they’re a little more more Russian-inspired. They’ll be added.

Borca is inspired by Italy during the time that Alexander VI was pope. Alexander VI's birth name was Rodrigo Borgia. Borca's co-darklords are based on Rodrigo Borgia (Ivan Dilisnya) and Rodrigo's daughter Lucrezia (Ivana Boritsi).

Of course, when the designers at TSR first created the Ravenloft setting, they gave most of the domains a generic Eastern European feel (with the exception of the obvious French-inspired domains in the west), regardless of the inspiration. Later designers gave more specific nods to Italy to Borca. The explanation being that Borcans had a Barovian origin but were enamored of the Dementlieuse culture and incorporated much of their culture into their own. The co-mingling of Barovian and Dementlieuse cultures gave Borca a quasi-Italian culture.

My windows cracked, but they can be replaced.

About the only other thing I'd want to see in there pretty badly is Vaasi. Other than that, seems pretty diverse to me.
