Help evaluating our host
« on: November 14, 2017, 11:24:38 AM »
I've been trying to diagnose our server to figure out why some people (especially in America) experience lag and more notably package losses. I've been in contact with our hosting provider hetnzer.de and they asked for some mtr traceroute logs.

For Linux, there's a brief introduction to using it here: https://www.linode.com/docs/networking/diagnostics/diagnosing-network-issues-with-mtr

But basically I just need as many as possible to install mtr and call "mtr 46.4.59.55" and "mtr --report 46.4.59.55", perhaps even several times during different hours, then post the input here so I can pass it on.

For Windows ,get this version: http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/

Here's a How-to: http://winmtr.net/how-to/ (but it's really incredibly simple)

In "host" you should insert "46.4.59.55" (sans quotes)

Let it run atleast for a minute or so, preferable at times where you experience lag, then "copy to clickboard" and paste here.

Thanks!

Is this only for Linux people?

Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men

Actually, McNastea made me aware that a windows version of MRT exists, so could try that. Grab it here: http://winmtr.net/

Mostly out of curiosity, but is there any reason it needs to be mrt and not traceroute (for linux/unix) or tracert (for windows)?

They requested mrt so I figure it's best to stick to that. My understanding is that it's a bit more precise and gives more information.

Because topology of the LAN is irrelevant for your purposes, I've omitted it from the output. At the time I ran the test there were 46 players logged into the server. It might be helpful if anyone is experiencing lag to mention what time it occurs even if they don't use mtr so that others who do will be alerted to test.
For everything that's lovely is
But a brief, dreamy, kind delight.

Hi,

It would continue to be hugely beneficial if people who are suffering from lag issues could provide some diagnostics data.

I've bundled the WinMTR program with the NWN Launcher in order to make it easier to run. You can download the update to NWN Launcher from the links here.

You can download WinMTR bundled ready for use from here.

Here's step by step instructions for providing us with the diagnostics data:

Step 1, option A: Download the Launcher and click the Gears icon in the top right corner:

Step 1, Option B: Download the WinMTR program from: http://5.9.81.74:2020/winmtr.zip Unextract and launch the WinMTR executable found inside the winmtr folder.

Step 2: If you started the WinMTR program via the NWN Launcher, it should now be collecting the required diagnostics.

If you started the program manually by downloading the zip archive above, you will now need to insert the server IP address (46.4.59.55) to the program, to the Host field. After that, you can press Start.

Like so:

Step 3: Let the program run for a minute or so. Once it has ran a minute, click "Copy Text to clipboard":

After you have done that, you can start a reply to this topic and simply press Ctrl+V to paste in the results of the diagnostics. The end result would look like this:
