Familiar Skin Spawned in Inventory

When I leveled to level 5, I changed my Familiar to a Fire Mephit instead of an Assassin Imp. The Skin for the New Familiar spawned into my inventory. Will my Fire Mephit still work? Can a DM help me take the skin of my Familiar away?
