One of the Garda present for the recent flogging never returned to the Citadel, even several cycles after her disappearance.

What fate could have befallen her, or where, becomes yet another of the countless mysteries of Barovia...

Lately, the nights have been filled with the smell of something rotting. Twigs crack in the woods and bushes rustle as if something was stalking the area. Weeping could be heard ever so softly sobbing in the shadows...

Ghouls attacked near the outer reaches of the outskirts just before morning, their smell wafting on the wind...

A number of bloodied bits of parchment begin to appear in various places, all reading the same thing:

Quote
My minions are mindless beasts that do as instructed out of fear.  You do not want me to join the fight proper.  This is your last opportunity before I begin taking lives.  Volunteer a Corvaran Half-blood for a conversation, or suffer.

Beneath the wording are a number odd symbols, except for those who understand Vistani Tralaks.

The streets of Vallaki seem to bustle with more activity than usual. Brown cloaks of the Vallaki Garda, alongside a few volunteers from local homes and businesses, are seen filling buckets of water and placing them around the overcrowded abodes of the slums. Throughout the day, frisian horses are moved through the gates and set down in front of the walls. By the time old noapte falls, there seems to be an increased presence of guards keeping watch along the walls.

The following night, a man in orange and black leathers approaches the note tacked to the tree, placing his own proclaimation below it before stepping away.

After the news of the beating of Zaya Corvinus spreads, a phrase carved onto the sign of the Lady's Rest appears.

Vallaki's guards emerge from the gates just shortly after dusk, attending a seemingly urgent matter in the outskirts. Their unease during the old night is apparent, and they hurry back inside once done.

Their task is revealed with the creeping light of dawn. A skeleton hangs from a nearby tree, stripped of any recognisable attire and bearing distinct cracks across its skull. A keen eye might note an unnatural lack of any sign of decay, and those familiar with the remains may recognise them as those of a prominent death knight who once terrorised the area. Alongside this grotesque display is a crude sign, constructed rather hastily, warning that any who would plot to undermine the lawful authority of the Count will surely share the same fate.

[A paper was pinned near the Vistani Camp exit, on the tree standing in front of the bridge and the lake, written in fine print in Albanian and Latin and tucked under the leaves of a tree to protect from the rain as much as it could be protected.]

Quote
"O' Sons and Daughters of the Eagle, you who are lost in this strange land, you who cannot find your way and understand their language, see the lights they cast from their fingers and don't know how to feel.
Seek out the Shepherd in Wolf's leathers for a talk, a song of the People, for a home away from home."

SEVERAL NOTES ARE SCATTERED ABOUT THE AREA THAT READ AS FOLLOWS:

Can you not hear it?  Can you not hear the whispers from the stars?  Can you not hear them calling to you?  Can you not feel them pulling at your heart, at your mind?  Will you not heed them?  Will you not heed the dreams that they bring?  Will you deny the Eldritch Enlightenment?  Fools tremble at the darkness!  True terror cares nothing for the light of any star, it is beyond the laws of nature, vast and terrifying beyond imagining, and to truly understand it is to lose one’s mind.

Hear and listen!   The Eldritch Enlightenment will set you free!  You will begin to see the true nature of the universe, and you will begin to understand it’s terrible, beautiful truth.  And in understanding you may be reborn as a child of the stars, transformed by knowledge and power, reshaped by will and wonder.  Will you come to laugh and dance with me?  Will you twirl and spin your way through the madness?  Will you let go of this illusion, this madness, and discover the truth? Will you embrace the Eldritch Enlightenment?

Embrace it!  The stars shall give you dreams of the truth, and if you accept them, you may yet find the way to true knowledge, true freedom, true power, and true bliss.  There is a nature beyond nature, a power beyond the gods, and that power calls to you.  Heed the call.  Bring forth the sacrament, the Essence of Madness, and be enlightened.

[Writings appear on the walls of the Vallaki Graveyard]

In the morning, following the defacement of the graveyard, two of the Mortuary folk and a kind helper are seen cleaning the yard of dead rats, scrawlings, et cetera. A note in Common and Balok is then left on the adjacent wall to the quoted writing above which, curiously, has been left untouched. It follows thus:

Over the course of approximately a week, a young half-gundarakite/half-vistani woman is seen begrudgingly handing out bread to any poor Barovian beggars who wander by her makeshift stall.

She occasionally converses with passers by, but generally wears a scowl and is unwelcoming to any who try to engage her in conversation.

The bread, however, is always fresh and usually warm.

A blonde Ezrite with a bright smile and a dimple in his right cheek is seen moving through the Slums, the Outskirts, and the River Luna. A temporary shrine appears in the Outskirts dedicated to Ezra, Our Lady of the Misted Road. Signs from the slums to the Luna note that the Faithful of Ezra are welcome at the Refuge of the Fifth Light. The placards are signed Toret Matthew Garrett.

During the late hours of the noapte, a Barovian woman was rumored to be paying large sums of wolf fangs for information regarding the vampire known as "Olivarius."

A blonde Ezrite Anchorite is seen replacing vandalized signs and erecting new ones throughout the City of Vallaki inviting the Faithful to the Refuge of the Fifth Light.

Every evening a few minutes before sunset, a man walks around in the outskirts dressed in red, white and gold. A golden gaunlet on his cloak with a single unblinking eye on it. He seems to meticulously place a wall of garlic around the outskirts. It seems that this man has plenty of coin and isn't afraid to spend it, every single route in and out of the outskirts is covered by garlic. He'd even go as far as to crush it just a little so the scent has an easier time escaping.

It seems he did this like clockwork, every sunset he'd start at the same time, clearly this man has some vendetta with a particular person that might not enjoy garlic as much.

A single note would be left, just outside of the reach of the scent of garlic.

The man would then prompty return inside of the temple.

The garlic is mostly removed, and only placed in strategic places that isn't inconvient or excessive in any way. Clearly the motivation for placing it is gone.

The night prior the burial of Lance Corporal Cosmin Onciul, while the funeral ceremony was being celebrated inside the Citadel, a young Gundarakite girl has been seen offering free drinks at the graveyard entrance.

A sign next to the drinks recited:

Quote
"FREE DRINKS TO CELEBRATE THE DEATH OF A RABID DOG"

The girl also planted some fireworks on the ground, probably with the purpose to fire them at the arrival of the funeral procession, but shortly before dawn she was expelled by an outlander woman.

At sunset, a strange beast sprints along the shadow of Vallaki's grey walls; an enormous stag with a rack of golden antlers that reflect the painted pink hues of the dying light. It vanishes to the west. Few locals claim to have seen the creature, with the exception of a young Barovian girl who's quickly ushered away by her world-weary mother. Hours later, a pair of travelers with Darkonese accents, a grizzled man and his daughter, stop in to the Lady's Resting Place for an evening's meal. Questions turn to violence in the establishment's basement, with the pair fleeing into the night before the dawn and the garda arrive.
