Ghastria - East Riding
« on: August 01, 2016, 05:26:57 PM »
[Anselme de Coursay, a recently disgraced nobleman from Dementlieu, has been seen regularly on the isle of Ghastria, within the village of East Riding. While he can be seen entering and exiting the Marquis' estate, suggesting he is staying there as a guest, he frequently goes to the Gold Wolf Inn favored by hunters and travelers abroad to meet and conspire with those he considers his friends or allies.]

[The day dawns, and with it the Ghastrian guards comb the island, searching for a foreign gentleman named Anselme de Coursay. Word has it that he was caught embezzling money after being given a position managing trade for the Marquis, and that the Marquis wants the man delivered alive to be punished.]

[Despite a decree made in the neighboring land of Dementlieu by the Council of Brilliance, banning all foodstuffs from reaching the shores of Ghastria, things remain more or less the same in East Riding. Either the Marquis' larders were large and full before the decree was issued, or the shipping of food is simply too lucrative and those who smuggle it to Ghastria, too clever to be caught. Will things change in time? This remains to be seen...]

An unconscious man was carried from the Gold Wolf Inn by a homely barmaid and a Lamordian physician, and taken in the direction of the docks. He was spattered with his own blood and bile, as was the inn room he left behind him.

A small woman is seen exchanging a large purse of coins at The Dark Heart before nightfall  - certainly enough for an extended stay, before heading back out into the night once more...

Supplies, construction material, sailors, dockworkers, engineers, and supervisors can be seen on the docks of East Riding. It appears that the Marquis of Ghastria has decided to work on building a far grander harbor to the surprise of the local people as their lord seems to be increasingly animated and has even made a rare appearance outside of his estate, seemingly in good spirits. Some whisper that he has grand visions of a powerful and rich Ghastria that can be and will be if he has his way...

[A brightly-garbed woman dressed in purple with vibrant red hair kept in a bun, accompanied by a woman with raven-hair of modest length, passed by the marketplace peddling sub-par wares in the middle of the village and made their way towards the Marquis' sumptuous and palatial estate.]

[A layer of soot and ash is belched into the skies above Ghastria and the various homesteads contained within the water-encircled land.  Embers swirl and carry along the air-currents, settling upon the lands with their ebony-dusting.  Within the twilight hours of the night of eruption, figures moved within the confines of the shadows; the waters around the harbor and northern shores churning with activity.

As the sun crested the horizon over the island, the distorted and corrupted trees already began their reclamation...buds forming along long dead limbs and foliage sprouting where once believed salted silt.  The native population gave little mind to the recent developments, their farmsteads and fields preoccupying their attention. Still, within the din of the dawn, a detachment of foreigners discreetly dispersed; leaving renewal in their wake. Future travelers and merchants, in the recent days to come, all leave their mark within the ash-encrusted roads and the visitors brush off a thick layer of soot that clung to their traveling mantles.]

A single, lone poster exists with a crude drawing in The Dark Heart Inn...

A curious sight in the East Riding today. A trio of mainlanders - two women, and a man in a white robe, walked into market. The shorter of the two; a fair-skinned brunette, offered five Solars for everyone who would stay and listen.
Seems she was a jilted lover, as she made her lady companion; a dark-skinned woman, confess her shortcomings in their relationship.

Such a strange display drew bewilderment from the stallholders, who turned and left muttering darkly; perhaps pitying the young woman forced into such a humiliating display by her clearly controlling companion. The children laughed and jeered, not even knowing fully knowing why.

Signs appear overnight by the Chapel burned in East Riding, the East Riding Market, the Road to East Riding, and the Docks. It seems pilgrims came in the night to offer tidings of hope and joy to the people of Ghastria and a prayer of hope for their ruler.

The signs read:

Quote

Ezra, Our Guardian in the Mist, loves and cares for the people of Ghastria.

The Church of Ezra offers prayers for the continued health and safety of the Marquis Stezen D’Polarno, and his people.

The people of Ghastria are dear to the Sainted Mother.

Ezra’s grace is manifest.

Rumors also abound of creatures of the night being found slain about the island come morning.

[In the morning hours, far before the dawn suffused over the island, a shattering of glass echoed through the countryside.  It was accompanied by the Ghastrian guards' shouting, lanterns aloft as they comb the island.  Dogs bellowed and howled into the night as the island crawled with guards and dogs purportedly searching for an escaping infiltrator of of the D'Polarno estate.

The manhunt and turning over of every obscure and hidden locale within the island continued long into the day and further into the evening hours, guards exhaustively investigating every ship's arrival and every possible means of egress.]

A dour, pale-skinned man with the only remarkable trait to him being pale blue eyes has recently begun to stay at the Dark Heart Inn.  Who knows for how long?

After a tense conversation between two women speaking Luktar, one of the women has been seen almost daily in the Dark Heart Inn. She seems to be waiting impatiently for someone, rarely ever leaving the inn, and returning within hours if she did.

In the late hours of the night, a tall warrior with black furs draped upon his shoulders, sporting a greatsword on his back strides through the town. A crimson sash is wrapped around his waist, serving as a vibrant accent to his ensemble. Hopping alongside him is a wounded frog that responds to his questions and remarks with a series of 'ribbits,' each with its unique tonal quality and expression.
