Replace Wereleopards with Werepanthers
« on: April 28, 2016, 01:39:42 PM »
So, with some discussion, I thought I'd post this here.

As it stands, we have access to a feline lycanthrope, yet it is entirely devoted to Har'akir.  The afflicted of this group are enslaved by the pureblood pack, and killed soon after, used only as watch dogs for the pack.  In my opinion, this is not a good basis on an AMPC set up.

I suggest that we replace them with Werepanthers.  With the passing of the invasions of Mordent and Sithicus, and the attacks from Werepanthers loyal to the darklord of Valachan, there can be little doubt that their affliction has spread into Mordent, Sithicus, and as far as the home of the Company of the Fox, Dementlieu.  A lasting, and dire ramification of the motives of Valachan's darklord.  The werepanther template allows for a much broader appeal to players.  We already see next to no Wereleopard AMPCs/MPCs, and very few Werejackals.

The problem with such is.. Werepanthers are very Rare and rather tribal lycanthrope. They are not exactly the same as your typical werewolf/bear or boar.

They are normally only found.. where their tribe is, Like Mordent, as many of us old Fox members remember that fight [shudders] and only going with what I have seen from the trip.. they are not effected by the moon. Not saying it would be bad to have them available but chances of finding one.. outside it's territory?.. slim since those that are to be turned are taken back to the tribe

Edit: Probably have a better chance of running into a wereraven than a werepanther.

You're reading the AD&D page.  Ravenloft werepanthers are much different from those outside Ravenloft.

Can we be sure of such? since I've only been able to find the AD&D info on them. they probably haven't changed much between the editions so we cannot say we're pulling these from 3rd or 3.5.

Without any other info on Werepanthers it is hard ot say if there truly is a difference in Ravenloft panthers vs non ravenloft ones. and this could be why we do not get them as a playable AMPC

But I'm gonna stick with my guns and say it is because they are tribal.. easily got the feeling of them like that when we first saw them in Mordent. I cannot vouch for the rest if they were in Sithicus due to it might have been a different DM playing them

The Werepanthers of Valachan are the Baron's enforcers, tax collectors, spies, assassins, and elite shock troops used during the invasion.  That doesn't sound very "tribal" to you, does it?  Even -if- they were tribal, it doesn't change the fact that the werepanthers razed villages and mauled civilians and soldiers alike during the invasion, which could and likely did spread their curse outside of Valachan.

It's MUCH more likely than running into a desert cat were beast outside of Har'akir.

that does not prove that they would be found outside their area... again they just kill and only bring back strong fighters to be turned.

Leopards and Panthers are the same creature, they shouldn't be two seperate things!

Depends on whether Old World or New.

Panthers are either black leopards (OW) or black jaguars (NW).

Not going to happen. Wereleopards are found in several domains, while werepanthers are only found in Valachan. Moreover, werepanthers are all servants of Valachan's darklord which narrows their playability quite a bit.

Could we get a list of those domains?

Well, technically speaking, panther is the genus of beasts which entail lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars.  Under this logical, you could already call wereleopards as werepanthers.  Just an opinion.

Firstly, while leopards and black panthers are the same animal in the real world, they aren't in D&D, so arguing about that is so irrelevant to be off-topic.

Secondly, leopards are not desert cats. They are jungle cats. A DM might have had a wereleopard NPC in Har'Akir, but that doesn't mean that they are native to or are limited to that domain.

Canonically, wereleopards can be found in the Wildlands and Sri Raji. They could presumably come from other domains with jungles such as Vechor or Rokushima Taiyoo. Since they are not tied to any specific NPC like werepanthers are, they can have a much wider background, and any random NPC could have been bitten by one to infect a monster PC.

Leopards and panthers have identical stats in NWN:

http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Leopard

http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Panther

Aside from color, the only difference is leopards have "open locks 13" as a skill, which is understood to be mistake for the "move silently 13" the panther has.

No. This is not a mistake. This is because leopards are frequently rogues, and steal wares to sell.

Any cat of that size would have the same stats, per the D&D rules: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/leopard.htm

Quote
The statistics presented here can describe any feline of similar size, such as jaguars, panthers, and mountain lions.

But this is, again, irrelevant to the discussion.

I hate to revive old posts....but can this be considered? Or perhaps install werepanther as an option as well as the wereleopards due to werepanthers actually being a staple creature in the realm in Valachan? Please and thank you.

Well technically a Panther is just a dark leopard or jaguar, so... you could kinda tweak the existing template to support it as just a cosmetically different phenotype maybe...?
