Crates not giving back wood?

Is this a bug or is it intentional? It really is making setting up a merchant stall a bother needing to get wood every in game day.

It's happening when using the Carpenter's Portable Kit to create, and then remove a placeable.

When you use it to remove the placeable, it previously gave back the planks/chunks of wood that were used to create it in the first place. Now it's not giving back the ingredients at all. I've tried it with barrels, benches, crates, none of them give back the materials.
