The Black Umbrella Club would like to welcome its newest member Esmeralda Isadora Tathorian to its fold. We are most delighted by her acceptance and are looking forward to her cultural and social contributions so that our club can continue to provide the citizenship of Vallaki support for all cultural and charitable events.

Whispers of a handsome man with a silver tongue are all about. There are also whispers of numerous break-ins and thefts in the area. No one seems to believe the two are linked.

Word has spread that a dear friend of Miss Markova's has fallen ill in Kartakass, she will be leaving for an extended period of time to care for her and has appointed Miss van Stark as the acting President of the Black Umbrella Club in her place. The position of Secretary is to be offered to Esmeralda while Miss Escher will retain her place as Treasurer. Best wishes to Lady Canovichika and her speedy recovery.

Word spreads through the small, insular town of Vallaki of strange new arrivals in the village. A female Anchorite from Mordentshire arrived by wagon at the Cathedral of Ezra ("Servants of the Borcan bitch the lot of them!" huffs more then one old itinerant oppressed Barovian), travelling alone except for an eight year old boy. This boy can often be seen wandering about the upper districts of town, doing such boyish things as chasing butterflies and looking for mischief. The people of Vallaki bregrudgingly have to admit the boy seems charming and polite, and the young women cluck together that the adorable lad will be quite the catch in eight or ten years. Every day without fail however, the lad returns to the Ezrite Cathedral for tutoring under the Anchorite, whose name seems to be Annallee Weddenborough. The Ezrite herself can often be seen wandering about town, spreading Ezra's word and fellowship.

Due to the fact she's a lady, the Men of Vallaki manage to refrain from spitting on her.

People whisper of some robbers trying to break into a noble's household last night...the inhabitants managed to board the door off, used to such thieves at night and fled through an open window. Strangely enough, nothing was missing when they came back iwth guards in the morning and the burglars fled.

Nobles and Guards alike speak of a poor man, near death, being removed from the rubble of the smoldering ruins of the barracks by the Anchorites of Ezra.

The Anchorites, in their green robes, but ash worn and torn from labor, are at the site working to remove the rubble, as well as praying for the fallen and their families.

Its believed the last survivor was found, but the arduous and horrific task of collecting body parts, clearing the shifting and dangerous rubble, and tending to the spiritual crisis of those who need mending, keeps the Church of Ezra diligent.

It is expected that a ceremony to honor the dead and suffering will take place.

All around the nobles' district, into the wealthy homes, the parks, the bank and especially the Blue Water Inn, men and women alike are seen gossiping more than usual. Between two chuckles and a few "I told you so", they seem to discuss of the latest rumor. It seems that the newest prominent outlander guard, Vasham, is in fact a vampire...and if that were not enough, some add that he may also fancy men. "A queer vampire!" one says, "Surely, that must be a jest, but he does have those unnaturally white hair and this gaze!" responds another. And such conversations are common and seem to be the hot topic of the day, most dismissing the rumor as an elaborate prank and a clever joke.

At the same time, others speak of how a high ranking corporal woman was seduced, perhaps even charmed, by one of those fey cultists of the Morninglord. They were seen together sipping wine and discussing for many hours in the Blue Water Inn out of all places, a symbol of Barovian pride. Some say that the guard undressed for the fey and that they may even have spent even more private time together. Such gossips stop abruptly though when a guard patrol passes by only to start again a few seconds later.

Just outside the church of ezra the previous night, a smattering of blood, black robes, and arrow shots line the street just outside, the wisps of dried blood are soon washed away though leaving some to wonder who was taken, and by whom

"Can you believe it? She invited me, me, to service!" *scoffs a fat noblewoman*
"Indeed, the sheer audacity! *chimes in another* As if I want to do anything with those green leeches!"
"They're probably trying to raise more money for their ridiculous church. I swear I don't know how the Burgomaster tolerates them."
"The son is one of those... what's the name? Ah, yes. One of those anchors of sorts."
"A shame to see such a youth wasted on such silly things..."

*Nobles gossip about the latest invitation from a young anchorite for the Fifth day service, speaking ill of the Ezrites before returing to the latest fashion trends and gossip. Words and chanting can be heard inside the cathedral, pouring out from its open doors while the nobles scorn about the lone man who assisted to service*

A well dressed young woman is also seen making her way to the church. Her clothing of exotic style remained humble as she stepped inside the church. By the color of her skin and hair she might have been a vistana but she was too pretty. Some will recognize Suzette de Lacroix, hostess and artist of the Broken Bell, assisting at the mass of the fifth day service.

The gossips that gather on the district's streets can be heard today talking of how Mr. Reinvich, the local recluse sculptor, was taken by guards under suspicion of witchcraft... some add in hushed tones that this was because of his involvement with a silver living statue that resembled his late wife.

*Over the past few weeks, several Barovian workers have been removing the rubble and the bent beams from the remains of what was once the Vallaki Garda barracks located behind the bank. As a heavy stone almost crushes a man, a loud curse is heard about the Dilisnya cultists. Other workers make their way with wheelbarrows removing dirt and rubble from the construction site. As a few men enjoy their meal and gamble their wages away out of their foreman's sight, several masons are seen evaluating which stones can be reused while others check the strong steel beams and mark them with chalk. Despite the containment wall, a cloud of dust lingers over the nearby homes, having some nobles eye the invasion of peasants and the "mess" the cultists are making with distaste.*

It is under the sounds of construction and chaos that the Bank of Vallaki re-opened its doors. Almost half the town's serfs came for the event, there was worry in the air and chaos, where a few manifestations of violence and theft occurred. It is rumored that there's talks about a Fey or Gundarakite tax in order to compensate for the losses in short term, although nothing official has been said on the matter.
