Evaluation of the new server: lag
« on: June 02, 2015, 04:09:48 AM »
So far, the transition to the new server seems to have gone relatively well - but there's been some reports of increased lag for certain individuals. This poll is to help us get a more broad view on how the server transition has affected your experience of lag.

Feel free to post any comments you might have in regards to this topic.

I will hold off on voting on this for a little while, just to make sure any lag experienced was not simply due to a DM event or the server being due for a reset.

So far I don't think I have observed a noticeable difference and the server ping on the server list looks normal, but I will give it a few days just to be sure.

I've noticed crashes happen more frequently, and this goes to the same evidence I've had when I was on it as the test server. I also wanted to include that it seems the periodic saving doesn't seem to work as often, this morning several people got rolled back 2+ hours of playtime. Overall things seem less laggy, but also less stable.

That happens to me often but it's not related to the server connection. Are you playing in Windowed mode? Did you make any changes on your hardware? I also find that I have that issue when the toolset is open.

Nothing has changed from how i played a day ago.

Now i seem all over the place. Some times i will transition quickly and have no lag and now others it seems like it takes 1-2 mins for me to transition and freeze up every so often. Prior to the change my playing was very predictable and leveled.

Lag wise the server seems good, but as mentioned, it is less stable, it's crashed at least three times today

Don't know if this is of any use to you guys, but I work in the IT sector, I'm currently Lead engineer for ConnectNZ in New Zealand, so if you would like advise / Assistance in performance tweaking or finding issues, let me know. (did you turn it off and on again?)

As I understand it, the app has been moved to a Google cloud platform, so even admins probably don't have much control over the hardware.

In terms of the app-specific expertise, they've been doing this for a bunch of years.

It's a big move, and they did it pretty quickly. Let's be patient and understanding. Don't do anything that you can't stand to lose until stability improves.

I was talking about in regards to the Host itself, I don't need anything to do with the software itself. Also if this is going through Google cloud servers... That's a bad idea =/.

I actually happen to have IBM X3650 Server, with ESXi already on it, with a few virtuals / licenses already on it. 18GB, 3TB, But of course it's a rack server and I have no where to put it. I'm curious of what it would cost to have it shipped over to the states and have it hosted by a data company.

I logged in on my Ezrite to preach since that seemed fitting due to all the crashes, but then the server crashed. :(

I've been trying to observe it whilst accounting for the fact that my ISP is garbage a good portion of the time.

I definitely agree that there appears to be a serious change in stability.  On a personal level, the lag seems much worse in it's intensity, if not it's frequency.

Why do you consider Google's Compute Engine a bad idea?

Anyway, the current instability seems to be closely tied to DMs logging in, which usually points to a palette issue. I'll try to fix that asap.

The latency is fine and usually stable. There were two crashes yesterday, both times it seemed it just crashed for no good reason I would know.

Oph, perhaps it has something to do with the relative size of our inventories--mine is fairly full, how's yours?

I meant that the server itself crashed, not my own client. I'm sorry for the lack of clearing. I don't think there was any big event or concentration of people in a given area, it just went kaput.

Pretty full to the point where I began deleting things other DMs passed to me when I started if I didn't think I'd realistically use it.
