Slow laptop- Advice please
« on: January 16, 2015, 08:14:21 PM »
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

My laptop as of late has been super laggy.  Slow with every programe. I've run anti spy-ware, root-kits and anti-virus, done a routine disk clean, and defrag, but it's still being super laggy. I can have only nwn running and it's slow.

Advice please

Hi (Dan here)

Hardware in computers age.. It may be a problem with heat from something, that causes the CPU to throttle, slowing things down. You can always download something like CPU-Z and Core Temp to see how the CPU is acting. Watch the temperatures carefully when running games and such. In some cases old computers thermal paste, the conductive material between the heat sink and CPU dries and crumbles, causing the CPU to overheat more easily. Replacing thermal paste on a laptop can be hard...

You might wanna also wanna try to reinstall windows fully.
And/or use this guide (It doesn't require a reinstall, but I'd advice it)
http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

The first time following that guide it might take you a couple hours.. But it's a very good tool, and make sure you read everything thoroughly.

(If the computer all in all runs pretty alright, and isn't too old, it can in some cases be a good investment to buy an SSD (Solid state drive) and replace the hard drive, since old hard drives can also slow down over time. SSD in some cases helps a lot, incase the other components are still in a pretty good condition)

I had a similar problem but.could never resolve it. I eventually caved and went back to a desktop :/

I'd +1 the advice given by satyricon.

I did a test on my Windows machine when I had this problem.  I backed up what I wanted to save and nuked the HDD (DoD Wipe).  Afterwards, I installed Windows 7, applied all updates and then installed NwN along with Fraps, Skype and Google Chrome. (No Anti-Virus or anything of the nature)

With only those applications installed / running, I have absolutely no issues.

On my Linux box, well...  Everything runs just fine even though I have about 1800 things installed....

If thats came with your device. There might also be a hard disk partition that contains stuff for your reformat. Might want to consult your owner's manual if you have one.

Here's a question.
Did you let Skype run its godawful update and have it running?

That thing absolutely crapped all over my laptop and I had to try and force it backwards to fix it

I totally missed this like a big dumb idiot:

There should be a link there to revert if you're still having issues.
Sorry.

Not a problem. You're gonna probably have to do a full uninstall and then reinstall from that version, and then when it prompts you like crazy to upgrade tell it to go @#&@*( itself.
Sorry it took so long to get back, I work helpdesk so I think I actively naturally block out any attempts at tech support outside of a work environment >_>;
