Custom rule on instant death spells
« on: November 23, 2014, 06:15:57 PM »
Since our early days, we've had a custom rule that spells that would usually result in instant death (e.g. Phantasmal Killer, Finger of Death) rather put you in a bleeding state. The reasoning behind this custom rule back then was that it was simply too frustrating to have an adventure cut short by these spells - especially since they have a tendency of catching you by surprise. Putting you in a bleeding state instead gives your friends a chance to heal you back on your feet, even if you'd still be so hurt that you would need to flee the battle.

However, a lot of time has passed since then and many changes have been implemented, and we want to reevaluate the rule.

The main drawback of the current approach really is that these spells are less powerful in this way, and thus potentially less frightening (and we like fear, after all!). It also may seem illogical at times when comparing to the spell descriptions and deprive us from some otherwise quite spectacular deaths.

So we turn to you - our beloved and revered community - for guidance. Would you prefer things staying as they are? Or should we make the spells that originally led to instant death do so again?

I vote no to instant death.  I like how it is (very balanced adventures, still requires multiple people).

Voted yes. Do it by the book.

I think the whole set-up already makes a lot of save-or-die spells very weak at high level, because high levels can be decked out in save-enhancing gear.

I voted yes.  It's lame to see someone dropped by a circle 9 death spell, just to be brought right to his feet back by a cure light wounds potion.

Yeah, I have never really liked how death magic doesn't really have a bite.

I vote yes as well. More power to the spellcasters in terms of pure magic!

And keep a potion of death ward in your inventory!!

If instant-death is able to kill, it would allow me to add macabre details to some spells and effects. Destruction is supposed to annihilate anything it kills. To represent that, I'd want to reduce the target straight to remains rather than a corpse. Drown causes a person to choke and fall unconscious rather than die, but when finger or death doesn't kill, this detail is lost.

In some spells I'm adding:

Detonate causes a creature's body to explode, and should leave only ashes behind.

Disintegrate should melt a target into remains.

These are some of the details I'd want to include if the community at large is does not feel that instant-death detracts from the experience. I think death can be as satisfying as life, as long as it's kept interesting.

Mechanical fear tends to detract more then it adds.

Voted against... I just can't help but shake the feeling that this doesn't really add the sort of fear that the sever setting is looking for. We are RP heavy here, and these spells should still be working ICly as killing you, or very very very nearly killing you without some aid. That should be terrifying from an RP perspective already. I do like the courtesy that the current system gives us, instead of relying on something as mechanically cold as saving rolls.

Fear should come from our creativity, imagination and story telling that we bring to the server and is present there already, rather than through a technical thing like this, I think.

I in no way shape or form feel any more fear than I already felt, so voted no.

Focusing on the "fear" question is misleading. Soren didn't even bring that question up.

The real point is that this is a house rule, taking us away from the book rules.

It is called "Finger of Death", not "Finger of Unconsciousness From Which You Can Be Saved". Voted yes.
