Lesser Items That Shouldn't Require Lore Checks to ID
« on: March 21, 2014, 08:58:48 PM »
I'm sure there are others that some players may wish to add to the list, but for me the most silly one are masterwork weapons. There's nothing magical about them, and I seriously doubt it would take much to recognize that the weapon is really well balanced, exceptionally sharp or what have you. Do we really need a lore check for these things?

Paper. And lanterns.

But I think it automatically assigns lore checks when an item has a use or any kind of property, depending on its value.

It does, but you can flag it as "identified" in the toolset.

So why don't you? :)

Likely just an oversight. There are a ton of items out there, and I can see how it would be easy to miss something minor like that. I just find it silly when I have a character that uses short swords who can't ID a masterwork one.   There are basic lanterns that need to be identified? I've never seen one before.

That's because you only really notice such things when playing things like a caliban without any lore skill, as they get a reduction to their intelligence as well.

This, plus I have no idea which items are not flagged as identified because I didn't make every single item out of the hundreds we have. Without a list like this, it'd be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Blank Piece of Paper and Large Lantern are the main ones I think.
At least of the basic items without actual bonuses or stats of sorts.

No idea about actual loot with stats like Masterwork stuff or such.

Well, I don't know if every masterwork weapon is like that but the short swords are definitely not identified. Those are the only (non-crafted) items with stats that I can think of that seem bizarre to have a lore check for.

To be honest, it doesn't seem that farfetched to me. Only a trained eye should be able to tell whether it is of fine enough quality to have been made by a master.
Back in the day it usually required an appraiser or craftsman to truly estimate the value and worth of an item. I don't think a random local is able to tell the difference.

But should that prevent you from being able to equip and use the item?

Right, that was my logic behind it. It wouldn't take much more than a few uses to figure out that the weapon is better than average. I will abide by the community's ruling either way, and this thread can still serve its purpose for reporting any other items that (perhaps) shouldn't require a lore check.

Good point. Unfortunate that you can't equip unidentified items and just use them with the standard stats of their base item. That'd be neat.
It could be explained as not being able to use them effectively because the weight is distributed differently and so on, but that's a bit of a stretch.
