Possible feat additions to Fighter [Discussion & Input]
« on: February 11, 2014, 05:53:57 AM »
In the tide of the changes to Ranger and suggested changes to Barbarian, a few additional feats to the Fighter class have been discussed in the developer team.

The rationale is that a pure Fighter doesn't - beyond level 4 - offer much in the terms of class-specific perks, when compared to a Fighter who multiclasses to any other full BAB class.

As with the suggested Barbarian feats, there's no guarantee that these feats get implemented nor are the details final. You may suggest feats, but they may not be implemented in the form you suggest them, or at all.

One suggestion is directly from DnD 3.5:

Quote from: d20srd.org
Greater Weapon Focus [General]
Choose one type of weapon for which you have already selected Weapon Focus. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple as your weapon for purposes of this feat.

Prerequisites
Proficiency with selected weapon, Weapon Focus with selected weapon, fighter level 8th.

Benefit
You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon. This bonus stacks with other bonuses on attack rolls, including the one from Weapon Focus (see below).

Greater Weapon Specialization [General]
Choose one type of weapon for which you have already selected Weapon Specialization. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple as your weapon for purposes of this feat.

Prerequisites
Proficiency with selected weapon, Greater Weapon Focus with selected weapon, Weapon Focus with selected weapon, Weapon Specialization with selected weapon, fighter level 12th.

Benefit
You gain a +2 bonus on all damage rolls you make using the selected weapon. This bonus stacks with other bonuses on damage rolls, including the one from Weapon Specialization (see below).

With this suggestion, it is possible that the required level changes. One suggestion has been level 13 for Greater Weapon Focus and level 16 for Greater Weapon Specialization, in order to offer something appealing to those who advance far in the Fighter class.

Another suggestion is as follows:

Quote
Martial Weapon Supremacy [Fighter]
Prerequisite: Fighter lvl 16, Weapon Focus (any two martial or simple weapons)
Bonus: The Fighter receives a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls
while wielding any weapon classified as "martial" or "simple" made with that
weapon. It does not apply to off-hand weapons that do not fall into this category.
The effect is not cumulative (i.e. +2) if more than one martial or simple weapon is wielded.

With these changes, we do not wish to fully remove the appeal of the multiclassing choices. A Fighter/CoT would still have much higher saves and special abilities of limited use. A Fighter/Blackguard would still do higher damage when flanking an opponent without Critical Immunity and Fighter/Weaponmaster would likewise enjoy higher damage against opponents without Critical Immunity.

Please share your input. :)

These are all good.

What about additional 'weapon specialisation' feats? A feat that adds additional type damage to Slashing, Piercing and Bludgeoning weapons, making Fighters powerful combatants irrespective of gear?

Liking the sound of these very much! I like the initiative to promote more pure class builds.

These suggestions are repurposing existing epic feats. What you're suggesting isn't really feasible due to the limitations of the NWN engine.

These feats are exciting, they'd actually make me consider rolling up a pure Fighter without internally cringing.

I love this idea.

Anything that promotes more pure classes is a wonderful Idea.

Re-purposing the existing epic feats to be available at the higher class levels is inspired :)

There are a few feats based around heavy armor use that I think would be neat to add on to that list, with a few modifications.

Armor Specialization

Heavy Armor Optimization (and greater)

The only issue I see with them is the fact that they only require a BAB of a certain number.

I'd propose making those BAB bonus requirements fighter levels, instead, and raise each of the numbers by two.

Therefore, Heavy Armor Optimization would require fighter level 6, thus negating the ability to just tag it on to say 15 Cleric / 5 Fighter.

I also realize that some of the abilities might be difficult to implement, like reducing the armor check penalty, or checking for flanking or flat-footedness to lose the DR.

Just ideas to be mulled over!
