Windows 8....
« on: January 25, 2014, 07:16:17 PM »
So... this system i just bought was supposed to have windows 7 on it, but it was upgraded to 8. i bought it anyway thinking it wasnt going to be much different.

I feel like i am looking at an alien world.

Help! What... what do i do? can i even nwn on this? where's the desktop? so far it looks like a bunch of apps, like a tablet or a phone would have.

It's really.. simple. And intuitive. I struggle to understand the nay-saying about the OS. It's not that much different from previous iterations, except the "under-the-hood" changes.

Click on your desktop tile. Or press Ctrl-D. And you're set.

I discovered my laptop is a touch screen, as well as normal interfacing.

Ctrl-D brought me back to my comfort zone, thanks raven.

Is there any way to change the interface so that it uses classic settings? Does anyone know?

Also, do I have to do anything "special" to get a clean nwn install?

If you mean the start menu, then there are custom launchers than return the functionality. I believe, if you have 8.1, even Chrome has some sort of launcher.

This article's a bit old, but it might help:

As for me, I've downloaded 8.1, but haven't installed it yet. There might be some changes with that version.

so my current problem is that nothing will download at all, because "my connection is too slow".

The thing about it, is that every computer on my connection does not have this problem, its limited just to this computer, and anything that has to download specifically from the win8 "app store" - which is almost everything.

is this a normal issue?

Hm. I've not encountered that issue before. Generally speaking, Windows 8 will download app updates, and little else. As a Windows 8 user since it's release back in... October '12 (?), I've never used the App Store for anything. I've installed everything as an EXE, just as with previous Windows iterations. What exactly is the problem? What are you wanting to do?

8.1 pops up error windows every time I try to start NWN, but it lets NWN run anyways. I recommend not getting 8.1.

Well, I cannot download skype, even though it says it was sucessfull, the computer claims the program does not exist. When I click the button in the "Start" ...thing... it opens and shuts down immediately.

None of the POTM downloads are  going -anywhere-

NWN won't install.

DVD's won't play (I have the software to play them).

And I can't even download my files such as school docs, pictures, or programs such as itunes.

it is basically telling me that everything must go through the app store, just like a damn cell phone or ipod, and that the app store is incapable of completing my task. I also run a pretty decent internet speed, and my tiny apartment isn't so big that I am not able to sit next to the router at least ten feet, or in the case of my desk, 5 feet. Basically, I just can't use the computer.

It sounds like you might be missing a driver? I can't say as that doesn't reflect my experience with the OS at all. I have a pretty slow connection, and I've never gotten those messages.

ah, the new slew of issues.

So i installed nwn, downloaded the files. Had some trouble with extracting, but i think we are past that.

newest issue is that it will not start nwn. I am not even sure why. When i click play, it says there is compatibility issues, and changes between a few different erroneous actions. id' print screen it, but.... that button seens to be missing.

Wierd. My laptop runs Windows 8 as its original OS, and has a Print Screen button.

I use the GoG edition, and it was as simple as downloading the game files and running the installer.

To run it you'll have to play around with compatibility mode. If you right click it there should be an option for troubleshooting compatibility.

Without intent for rudeness, I'd ignore that. I don't run NWN in compatibility mode. It runs fine normally.

So i got it to run. Sorta. I still have to select to "allow nwn to make changes on this computer" which is weird. I made sure the firewall doesnt block it, and I can watch the  intro movie. Touch anything, switch any windows, alt tab, the whole thing crashes.

:/

I've used Windows 8 on two different computers, played NWN on both, and never come across that problem.

You're running it as an administrator?

scratch all of that. I dont know what I did but i am in. All the files and everything.  I thought for sure i'd have to dowload CEP twice. looks like we are golden, but not to get too cocky, i am going to log in and out and restart and try again to make sure. because i really dont know what I did.

Say, raven....

Do you have any idea how to turn off the glide pad/touch mouse thing when an external device is in use?

It's usually a keyboard shortcut, using the function key, and one of the F-# keys. For me, it's Fn + F6. You ought to see some touchpad-looking icon on it.
