Small Creature, Small Humanoid
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:04:23 AM »
So, in my opinion, these names are entirely useless.

Everyone knows what a Grimishka is in Barovia.  Why call it "Small Creature?"  I mean, when you enter an area with one, you can see it named Grimishka briefly before it's auto-renamed.

Makes sense!

Never mind, 'en.  Would be nice to see it though for natives of Barovia, since they're common folklore there.  But I suppose there's engine limitations.

I don't really understand the purpose, until we have incredibly similar, but deadly indifferent monster spawns.

Like the ability to not understand the different between a ghoul and a ghast, but worse. lol.

If you want to play a char that can recognise exactly what a creature is by sight, you should boost up the Lore skill. Since in NWN it counts as all forms of knowledge including folklore.

Without this your char really shouldnt know what a vampires weaknesses are, or what certain monsters are by sight. But that is the thing with RPing ones stats. Its why Kayne when you see him mostly just hits monsters, since clearly the char doesnt know each creature by sight

You're saying mechanically? Because, even with a +62 lore modifier, it still shows as "small humanoid" for me.

[Lore: 62] "I have seen many humanoids in my time here, and yes, that is a small one."

Or there could be a bug, and you could contact mister Soren about it

I highly doubt there is a feature implemented that alters the naming of NPCs depending on the level of your lore skill.
If there is I have not noticed the difference either, while some of my characters have a pretty decent lore skill as well.

Although it is true that you sometimes briefly see them as Gremishka before they are renamed to Small Creature / Humanoid.
The technical reason for that is probably just a minor delay or lagg from the server. And I would guess the reason behind renaming them to begin with may be because they're supposed to represent a variety of generic small creatures / humanoids from folklore, not just Gremishka, even if the mechanics used for it are primarily those of Gremishka NPCs. Only drawing that conclusion based on the fact that certain other areas do correctly refer to them as Gremishka by name, regardless of your lore skill.

That would be my guess and just that, a guess. If there is a renaming server feature related to lore checks it may be buggy.

Actually there has been such a system implimented, but there might be some flaws in the system still.

In that case I can't wait to see what Large Hook Horrors are going to turn into. Giant Plucked Turkey Creature?

Considering that the natives of Barovia are so ignorant that they can't tell the difference between werewolves and vampires, you are highly overstating how knowledgeable they are.

Hmm...  hard to distinguish hook horrors from vrocks, then ;)

I think the model for the Vrock has been changed from the vanilla one that the Hook Horrors also shared to the winged version. They'd look very different to one another, dem NWN limitations.

Spoiler: show

a Hook horror would be a Heavily armoured plucked turkey. and a vrock would be a partially plucked turkey
