Things progress.
I have the protection of the drain once more and will move up the ranks swiftly.
Taskmaster again.
At least Fredek has figured out that I am different to all his simpering toadies.
I give respect when it is earned.
I stick to my word, the spirit of the words.
I do not lie.
I do not betray.
I do not fail.
I am a professional.
The contract still needs to be sealed.
Monsters all over the drain.
Ghouls and vampires and wights.
I thought they had enough crypts without strutting around amongst the downtrodden.
Killing them all would be counter productive.

New contracts.
Life becomes a careful balancing act.
I know what I can do.
Holding one in abeyance until payment is given.
Two complete and awaiting reimbursement.
She took the little mute girl.
Not my problem but I took a risk anyway.

It seems I was foolish to try to help people without being asked.
I am not letting that happen again.
The shame burns more sharply than acid on my skin.

My account is fat enough for now.
Time to focus on my training.
He wants to teach me.
I wonder about the cost.
If it's simply a matter of money or service... I can live with that.
The time of keeping my blade sheathed and hands clean will soon come to an end.
Equal parts elation and anxiety thrum through me.
To hold someone elses wealth in hand is something I am used to, but their life?
Intoxicating.

A market.
Perhaps it will be nice to concentrate on something so mundane.
Taskmaster again... does this speak to my reputation or to the desperation of the drain?
Awaiting pay on the contract, the counter price has jumped sharply.
Enough to tempt me...
Not until the current contract is complete.
Professional.
One thing at a time and I can still have both.

Hm.
Third option.
You try to be kind, you try to -help- but some people...
Consider that sham over with.
Self fulfilling prophecy.
Cuter than you.

Dinner and a cuddle.
Lucky girl.

Freak.
Soulless.
Monster.
I suppose I should make some kind of rant about showing them all or something similar.
No.
I do not think I will.
Entering the final testing stages now.

Final tests went without a hitch.
Subject three, normally strong enough to delay whole groups, died instantly.
I am satisfied.
All that remains is the payment.
Three hundred thousand is a lot of money.
If they are as reliable as they are pride filled it seems rock solid.
Could I trust them to actually pay?
Ha. Ha. Good joke.
Another war looms.
Is it to be with them?
With ourselves?
With a third party?
No.
I am not playing this game again.

Only one thing left to do.
I need to be able to do this or give up on my current path.
But can I?
Can I just snuff out the life of a total stranger?

Payment has been made.
My hands are shaking.
Fear?
Excitement?
I think the outcome will determine that but I feel its echos already.
It is time to take the last step.

Irony.
I was not even considering it until she told me I could not do it.
Do other people feel that way, I wonder?

It is the waiting that can be the most difficult aspect of this work.
Passing up weak chance after weak chance, waiting for that one, perfect, strike that cannot be countered.

Mikhail.
He seems alright, for a human.

Vijaya.
If she actually charged all those men she would be rich.
Likely only to be rich in disease and worthless favours.

Gold is worth next to nothing to me... but at least it will not betray me.
The love of another is worth less than a copper piece.
Except Millicent.

Confusing.
Mortal races are so confusing.
Worried for me?
Think I am beautiful?
I do not want to understand these things.
Distractions.
So many distractions.
This contract is taking too long.
I need another to fill the time.
The cipher is finished at least.
Xarah is alive.

Selane gives compliments
Ionel gives weapons
Mikhail gives flowers
Do I have a use for any of these things, really?
It is my birthday tomorrow.
Nineteen years of surviving
All I want for my birthday is a way to advance.

I took another holiday.
Lamordia is my favorite of these lands.
Machines,  simple, clean, efficient.
All things known and clear under my fingers.
I have returned to the drain once again.
New faces everywhere but I am remembered.
Gratifying? Perhaps.
Once again I build a reputation from dust.
Fredek is gone.
Bors still lives.
I will be accepting Anjas bid.

The days pass in a flurry.
Contracts come and go swiftly.
So many satisfied clients.
My reputation spreads like ink in water: silent, but pervasive.
I have made Xarah understand.

Cern
A horned tiefling from sigil, he is clearly considering the ramifications of this dreaded domain. Will he fight, or surrender?

Craven
The first skin walker I have met in this place. He is slow, cosidered, thoughtful. More human than any of the humans I know. He could have been great with a different birth, but so could we all have been.

Kolos
The cleaver. Pale in a new skin but perhaps with less ambition. Probably a good thing.

Arianna
the songbird has asked to become my apprentice, but I fear that her broken soul will cause her to fade away soon.

Sem
she combines the soul of a succubus with the face of a shark and STILL manages to attract males. It would be like kissing a rotary thresher. She us not useless, however. Which is pleasing.

Should I feel something for him?
No, he was a stepping stone to my future.
I await the confirmation of my largest contract to date.

I have a list, at last.
Now I can work at my own pace.
It may be ambitious to try to handle the whole thing alone.
I watch and plan, I see more than I say... it must be so.

Alex
Capable an interesting target, to be sure. All taken care of now. Bolg owes me a tidy sum for this.

The Magic Thief
I... am not entirely sure what to say about this one. Probably short lived anyway.

Simeun
My only living peer. Capable, confident, solitary... a bit dreamy.

The uncertainty in the drain remains. No crews. No dwellers. No coin coming in. How long can they keep this up? If the time has come to buy my place... I am ready.

RN
Finally, it can really begin. My first true agent. He will be very useful.

Well.
That was interesting while it lasted.
Cleaver and I have reached an understanding of sorts.
Two contracts are almost conflicting but I should be able to make it work.
I do so dislike uncertainty.

Kian
Now that he has come to understand my motivations I doubt that we will have any reason to conflict. He even seems willing to listen to and take aboard my advice, which is surprisingly rare in a human.

Almost had a run in with the guard thanks to that old man. As always discretion is the better part of not getting finely diced. Unnecessary bloodshed always annoys me, after all. Cleaver was surprised when I accepted his offer. Like the other bans before him he cannot quite seem to understand me... perhaps it is a failing in my own communication skills but spelling things out over and again is tiring. On the other hand caliban do tend to be a bit... basic. No matter. He means well and has seemingly stopped thinking about me in a lecherous way, or at least not making it obvious as he does with every other female, barn animal or large vase that he comes across.

I have no sooner attaoned a level of mastery then I have an apprentice.
She doesnt know it yet.
Soon.
Everything else continues quietly.
interesting question, do all mages begin as arrogant megolomaniacs or is it something they develop over time?
does the power to conjure fireballs cause you to believe yourself better than others, somehow?

Things progress well. My apprentice is intelligent if a little obsessed by the act of killing.
I am assisting my agent in a matter, fortunately it is already resolved.
a group of people called me nice today...
Nice.
The undermarket will be soon. I have been instructed to make myself seen, talk, socialise. Am I to be the sheathed claw of the drain?
Perhaps it will bring me some work.
Nice...
It must be something in the water.

The undermarket was interesting.
Not for me, but for others.
Bors threatened my life, perhaps he has a short memory?
A riddle and a fetch job. Could have been worse.
My date went well, delicious, melt in my mouth well.
I will have to arrange to see her more often, like the old days when we would sneak a cake off a cart and eat it, watching the traffic of the city. Before things changed, before I changed.
At least she will never betray me.
An interesting thought was raised: I should kill to fulfill my own needs and desires rather than the desires and needs of outhers... something to think about.
Would I really want that level of involvement?
I am starting something new, fresh blood, fresh minds.

I finally have one of the three and it was a simple job.
I will have to get another keg for Xarah in repayment.
Star and Cyrus were married. How I hate them.
Ceryn has made a proposal and I think I may take him up on it... even though I hate the thing that controls that place.
Amelia... So young at a hundred years. She will learn the truth soon enough.
Love is a lie they tell you so they can do whatever they want to you.
I have become more outgoing in some ways... I even have friends... perhaps.
Kian has gotten over his silly tiff about my spying, a shame in a way, the shouting was almost like being married again.
Ophelia, finally a chance to clear my record, redeem my only failure.
