so.. windows 8 crashes
« on: May 11, 2013, 07:33:43 PM »
still getting some crashes with nwn, really annoying

i have tried the following

1. downloading diamond edition from GOG that has win 8 support
2. downloading direct x9 redists
3. setting numcpu = 1 in nwnconfig.ini
4. setting affinity to different levels
5. running my shortcut as admin, with xp sp3 compat, disabling dpi

still seem to get crashes... any other ideas?

here is my rig:

Intel i5 2500k
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
Two XFX 6950 2GBs (Crossfire)
CM Hyper 212 EVO
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws Series 1600
Corsair Graphite Series 600TM Mid Tower
Corsair 850HX PSU

crashes do not have a specific pattern either..

I don't have any specific profile setup for nwn in my AMD catalyst

here is my nwnconfig.ini:

I have a new Windows 8 laptop, and thus far I've not had any problems running the game. Maybe it's an issue with the graphics card or processor?

If its a graphics issue you can try adding this under the Game Options

[Game Options] and adding "Max Memory Usage=32"

How it relates:

Larger memory addresses an issue with nwn frequently crashing to certain models, such as horses

trying with afinity to use all processors.. seems to be ok so far.. will try the max mem if i get another crash

win 8 is good, i dont want to derail the convo but.. fast bootup speeds, much better security, 100x better UAC, and the metro combines the start menu as a replacement for your desktop, its useful... and i have the startisback app as well so, its ideal. UI is not everything.

Nwn works better with only one core or processor. Splinting the work load up can cause stability issues for a game that was only designed for one core.

Also with the memory 32 is better then max, at 64 or higher it causes frame rate to drop to 5 or so on some machines.

Sometimes setting the cpu affinity does not work in settings if threading is turned on your video card

If all else fails, Partition on the hard drive that runs win 7 operating system, that space is only for running nwn etc

I launch directly from nwmain.exe, not running in compatibility mode or as an administrator.

I'm not convinced nwconfig.ini even does anything.  My nwconfig.ini contained information from the last time I actually installed this game clean, which was on another computer at some point in the extremely distant past (since then I've just copy-pasted the whole thing from computer to computer).

I renamed nwconfig.ini to something else and the game didn't make a new one or seem to notice at all.

I hope that at least keeps you from wasting your time with that file.

You don't say where your game is crashing at, but for startup, you can try adding
Disable Intro Movies=1
under [DISPLAY] in nwn.ini.

I had issue earlier with repeat crashing every 60 to 180 seconds after the update until dm strogi had me remove my over ride folder. No crashes after. Appears be some type of over ride conflick. Aldo tjis is a fresh install that only has potm stuff.

seemed to help but now i get a random distinct crash instead of just stopped working

microsoft visual c++ runtime library
abnormal program termination
nwnmain.exe

this is ingame, happens regardless of what im doing.. maybe happens once every 1-2 hours

thoughts?

google search seems to think it might be sound related
or another suggested trying windowed

Really dumb question

But

Tried playing without sound?  I know the program still acknowledges sound but not plays it but maybe that helps.

That's what you get BTW for upgrading
Tagdar Stonebeard- the lone statue
Mihas Mandruleanu- He is the law
Gurdan- priest of the allfather, and current head of the silverhand trading company

I only just seen this thread.

You should be able to use the sky boxes Talek, though ATI based cards have had issues with shiny water since around 2004 IIRCly.  Causing various graphics anomalies or crashes to large FPS hits.

Squeak.
