Graphical Issue: Red Blocks of Doom
« on: February 08, 2013, 08:06:10 PM »

I'm sure this isn't brand new, but I honestly didn't want to take the time to do a hardcore search for the answer on the forum. I searched for a bit though.

As you can see in the image, some of the walls on the server show up like this for me since I installed the game on my new pc. Also, some small size characters appear invisible on-screen sometimes.

May be a graphics card issue related to over-heating, out-dated drivers, memory overflow from the NWN engine if you haven't restarted it recently or just general performance issues.

No lag, new pc. Though I suppose I could reset it just for the heck.

Try NWNCQ textures.

Ugh, no. Not unless you like lensflare.

The issue looks like your card doesn't support DDS textures. Are you using a laptop?

I most certainly am, yes. The red blocks are the only issues. They're scarce too. Other than that, my graphics are doing splendidly.

I get these on occasion, most noticeably at the walls on either side of the Outskirts temple and at the campfire and wagons in the Outskirts Vistani camp and the mist camp.  They showed up about four or five months after I started using a new laptop.  If anyone finds a workaround, I'd be very grateful :)

This is a graphical driver issue. I was forced to mess with the settings on my laptop to get 'Amnesia: Dark Descent' to work right (otherwise no graphics at all for it) and immediately after I did that red blocks of doom showed up everywhere un-walkable blocks had been placed.

Well, it isn't affecting my gameplay so far, so it isn't a big deal.

Pretty sure there's a way to disable the lens flare! But to the point; retexturing the trouble areas with NWNCQ should fix it, no?

I hate the way NWNCQ changes the way our areas look. Most of us spent a lot of time making our areas look just the way we want, and then that override mungs things up with a bunch of flashy nonsense. Even the "regular" textures make standard areas look off.

It has some good, some bad. I'd take a different set of textures over fourth-wall-breaking giant red blocks though.

*casts an ornate thread necromancy ritual, complete with blood letting.*

hey, was this ever solved? I am having the same issue. Everything is great, fine, dandy, except these silly looking red blocks.

I recall a friend of mine, with the exact same files as I did, so there were absolutely no corruptions, I even c/p'd mine over to his computer,
having the issue with red blocks. He used an Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics processor, which may have had something to do with it.

You just can't catch a break, huh Ty? Best I can suggest is to tinker with every setting, one at a time, to see if anything changes it. You can also try NWNCQ and see if it replaces the textures in question.

Everyone I've seen have this problem had it due to using integrated HD3000 - HD4000 graphics.

They may not support certain features the game required. Or the server, at least.

The red blocks are supposed to be invisible in-game and only look like red blocks in the toolset. Your video card, or probably more accurate to say your video card's drivers, do not seem to be able to render them invisible in-game.

I have had this bug on every system with which I have played on Ravenloft, including a spectrum of Nvidia and Intel cards, different operating systems, multiple installs, etc. I've never not had it, and I've been playing since well before the date I joined the forums. I've basically given up at this point; it's not too immersion-breaking, so I just kinda go with it.

I'm getting these blocks as well on a new PC, also my menus flicker in and out at times. Any ideas?

I don't get the "Red Blocks of DOOM" What do they do attack you? Or can you attack them?
I do get the occasional invisible creature. Especially if its the Tiny Creature in the cave near the Vistani Camp.

And what's up with the Barovian Male (fights like a monk) asking for our ID? Then Attacking, and running off to summon the Guards? Making the guards Hostile to you.  If its Role-playing that's killer. But if its just some one trying to get players killed to steal gold, then screw that trash.

Hugely inappropriate. This isn't the place for this.

I still have this issue myself. I am thinking it's because the computer is too new for the game, or some sort of incompability between the haks and the graphics card.

You'll probably have to downgrade your video card drivers to an older version.
