More Frequent Server resets.
« on: January 27, 2013, 06:50:18 PM »
With the great numbers of players we have, seeing well over sixty at times which is indeed a wonderful thing. The result however is that the server starts to lag quite badly more frequently. I'd like to ask everyone to stop leaving camp fires, dead dear, and other such things to reduce the lag but I think that would be asking a bit much and frankly I'm not sure all the players we have read these forums anyway.

As such I would like to suggest that the server be reset more frequently, in my mind I think once per day would be ideal. Your thoughts?

I think there should be some sort of automated thing that'll reset during a certain level of lag and or a certain number of people in a 24 hour period.

Basically, it'd reset itself during the night.

There'd be a countdown and all that.

Automation isn't reliable. However, I can agree on more frequent resets. Even being close to the source, I can still get very laggy after it's been up for quite some time.

How about make those as tips for the starting room/journal?
You know, it never hurts to keep people aware and as you said - not all of the players read the forums.

Soren is working on some optimizations to handle the increased server load

The trouble is I think most would just ignore it unless it was made a punishable ruling. I have been getting rid of camp fires and such when I come across them but one person can only do so much. A more frequest reset though clears the board as it were.

Now that is music to my ears

Not leaving an excess of @marks and items lying around would be good too:

How about allowing initiating in game voting for server resets? Or would that be too distracting?

Had thought about a similar feature for booting hackers etc.

Superb idea, so long as there is a good few minutes countdown as well. My only concern about automated resets is that, as has been mentioned, they don't always work & you end up with server that constantly resets itself or one that goes down & stays down.    Having said this its Søren we're talking about, so I'm not all that worried.

This is why I only leave about 5 @marks in the slums per reset, and I keep them widely spaced. That way passerbys can still see the RP that is left behind from "Donations" while still trying to be server friendly.

No idea how that'd work but sounds great!
