Barovia - Mt. Baratak
« on: November 11, 2012, 05:57:56 AM »
The bunkhouse for the mining camp on Mount Baratak's northern face is the scene of what appeared to be a ritual of blood and fire.  The air is heavy with a dread presence, only adding to the chill of the storm outside.

Barovia - Summit of Mount Baratak
« Reply #1 on: April 12, 2014, 08:04:51 PM »
[A great blizzard affects all who live underneath the shadow of Mount Baratak, bringing with it snow, ice, and intense chill. From the farm resting on the very eastern edges of Vallaki to the flooded countryside of Krezk, the Barovian people are made to suffer. Hardy men wander off into the forest in search for firewood for their barren hearth, only to die of frostbite. Emaciated wolves are driven by starvation down from the mountain to slake their hunger, feasting on hapless wanderers. Pestilence and famine take hold in this blizzard's wake, claiming the lives of many who are young or infirm...

This blizzard shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, only growing in intensity and strength as time goes on. Despite it nearing the end of winter and the beginning of spring, this winter weather has proven to be the worst Barovia has seen in decades. The name "Jezra Wagner" is on the lips of many Barovians, and a superstitious gesture is made over their chest as it escapes shortly after...]

[A bright light is seen from the summit of Mount Baratak. As quickly as it came, the fierce blizzard brought about by Jezra's wrath begins to dissipate and grow weaker overtime, until nothing is left. Winter is slowly being made way for spring, and the pain and misery brought by the chill and frost is but a memory. How many lives were lost, though? How many families were destroyed by famine and death? None can say, but the Barovian peasantry nevertheless endure, as they always have.]

A suspicious looking individual in dark robes has been seen on the roads. Many corpses of wild animals can be seen on the way to the abandoned temple high in the mountains along with a fresh trail leading towards the temple directly.

Three individuals enter the monastery near the peak of Mt. Baratak. They enter the largest structure amidst the courtyard, dousing the symbols laid there with holy water and ground up garlic. The entrance of such a structure is lined with a barrier of ground up garlic, too. They remain for a while, one particularly large, armoured Ezirite murmurs a prayer before they leave the monastery the way they came.

A pale man in gaudy, desaturated, green and brown sleeveless armor walks up and around to the Wagner silver mining encampment. He looks around as if to inspect the scenery in all it's brevity, before walking off -- seemingly satisfied with something.

A group of traveling clerics wearing the symbol of the Morninglord are seen setting up a camp in the Mount Baratak forest. The camp, though small, appears to have the clerics hard at work, with wooden barricades being formed at the entrance of their enclosed refuge. They are said to offer healing and shelter to any soul passing through.

Near the base of the Mountain lies a scene of gruesome slaughter. Ox killed by no normal means only hint at the what partook there; torn asunder and devoured like a wild animal had feasted. Their hearts all sucked dry.

Nearby lay a torn journal entry...

A creature's howl filled with rage echoes throughout the night. After a few moments, the wrathful howls turn into those of glee as if the creature's hunt had been successful. Wet sounds of feasting can be heard further down the mountain before a horrifying scream shatters the silence wrought. The screams of horror echo further and further away up the mountain...

A note is left to a tree, a corpse with his hand pinned to the trunk by iron nails would present it clearly in it's blood-stained manner.

Under a new truce and set of terms between The Wayfarer Kinship and I, Caelun of House Lupus, Fire-Keeper of Mt. Baratak. The nature of this mountain does not welcome the living, as such is which I guard. To those whom see this warning, you will be subject to the same curse that haunts these peaks and as according to such, I have put these following terms that shall now be forced into effect and those who trespass:

  • Those who seek to climb and enter this domain, you may do so freely from Sunrise to Sundown. (6 AM - 6 PM). Those who are caught beyond this allotted time, will not be spared and face Trial for their trespass, or put to Death if they are not willing.
  • To those whom seek the Silver Mines, an arrangement will be done appropriately by visit with invitation and signed by /MY/ blessing. Otherwise, if you are caught, you will be put to Death. If someone should ask for Plea, you will be granted such after Trial.
  • These terms are final. To those whom are lost and seek to alight The Flame within them, you are not alone. You need not be Tarnished, you may accept the Purification and find hope in your darkness.

Attempts to remove the notice are met with replacement the next morning.

A hooded man clad in green can be observed as he makes his way up to Mount Baratak in the middle of the night
After reaching the gates to the Silver Mines, he nails a note to the front door while the echo can be heard through the mountains.

The abandonment of the Monastery of Silver Threads is cut short this night; A strange series of humanoid and cat footprints leads into the place, and whoever would investigate would walk into a gruesome scene in the huge, dark hall featuring the remains of some long forgotten sun cult...
