Barovia - The Balinoks
« on: May 18, 2019, 04:26:22 PM »
In the early hours of the morning, a tremor was felt from Krofburg and as far south as Vallaki.
It seems heavy rains during the night had triggered a minor land slip in the mountains.
Come the dawn hours.. all there is to be seen is a pile of rubble and scree.

[Travelers through mountain passes would see messages affixed in key locations at the crossroads of Vallaki, Dvergheim and Krofburg as well as marking the giant gate to eastern Barovia.]

The fratricidal Bochinsky is a traitor to the Count. He has usurped his office, and his toady Lidia Chirilov knowingly aids him in his treachery. From the nothing Village of Krofburg, these embezzling cronies and thieves purport to ignore the legal rights of Vallaki and all other municipalities who serve the Count. In doing so, they set themselves above every other vested official of the Count’s government and assert this power grab solely on their own whim, having received no such authority from the Count himself.

Any Barovian not under the boot of the brother-usurping whoremonger and his loathsome hag should find this situation intolerable. Is Vallaki the weak stepchild of Krofburg to observe Krofburg's criminal edicts and demands while Krofburg offers shelter to Vallaki’s wanted?

Make no mistake. These scofflaws are plotting against the other Burgomasters and the Count himself. A wolf willing to betray his own brother and seek to murder his brother’s unborn twins will not be sated devouring Krofburg’s sheep. Ask yourself why the once pastoral village has become a haven for those who have broken the Count’s laws elsewhere.

The answer: To assemble a force of the Count’s enemies reliant upon Bochinsky and his lickspittle Chirilov.

Any who aid them in their treason and their threats to the lives, safety and stability of the good people of Barovia should suffer the same fate as this den of demon-summoning traitors.

A lean, scruffy young woman, in a ratty yet sturdy red coat and hood and with a silver pin in the shape of an insect, is a common sight on the mountain path from the village of Krofburg to Vallaki. Today, at least, was no different. In the western outskirts, near the gates of the Grey City, she collects a hefty sack from a pair of well-known artisans.

The woman in red then took the road west, before turning south at the crossroads over the bridge, and followed the west bank of the Luna River down to Berez. The sky an almost unnaturally cloudless blue for Barovia, she takes one final look back towards the town, before departing down the road to Teufeldorf where she would stay the night. The following day, she would take the road east into Kartakass, where any trail goes cold ...

As the dawn swiftly approaches the sound of yelling filled with rage echoes throughout the roads. It soon breaks to the sound of a long howl, it's frustration persisting for minutes before silence...

A horrid scream echoed out at the quarry followed by the wet smacking of some vile feast...

[The deafening avalanche that quaked down from Mt. Ghakis—shattering the earth down to Vallaki and the surrounding areas—seems to have settled over the course of the night, leaving behind an impassable fall of terrain.  A couple of local Vallaki Garda were spotted surveying the damage before ushering local outlanders to assist with opening the road up for trade.]

[Turfs of dark smoke bellow out of the mouth of a cave overlooking a trail leading from Vallaki's southern farmlands and into the Balinok Mountains. Those who would dare to brace the blinding smokescreen and the scent of burning flesh would find a pile of charred corpses within the cave, burned beyond any recognition.]

Rumors from travelers on the road to Krofburg of late that strange undead have been spotted in the lower mountains, heading south. Most travelers have managed to avoid any issues, but small skirmishes have been to crop up, especially with Bellegarde trade caravans.

[Deep in the Balinok Mountains where a large camp has been set up, what can only be described as a massacre has occurred in the middle of the night while the occupants slept. All that is left from the slaughter is a ritual circle that has been rumoured to be similar to those left in other parts of Barovia.]

[Word may spread quickly throughout the Balinoks and Vallaki area of an immortij with a jaguar's pelt making sacrifices at dawn near the Balinok mountains; a great massacre was said to have occured on the night of 10/30/778 with many dead and two with their heads taken off, their bodies painted blue, and their hearts removed. The immortij is said to refer to itself as 'Quauhtemoc, the God of Death...]

[Word may spread once again a great massacre and series of sacrifices occurred at the foot of the Balinoks though perhaps this time was different... It is said three intense rays of light shone onto the sacrificed hearts for a brief amount of time before disappearing... perhaps there is truth to the Jaguar's word and faith?]
