Roleplayed capped?
« on: October 06, 2011, 07:34:22 AM »
Maybe this was asked (and answered) previously, but I'd rather check again.

Recently, I was "fresh to take in whatever the mists throw at you"...after roleplaying for several hours with two people, I got the "pushing yourself more than what is needed" message.

That had me thinking, is RP XP also accumulated and counted as XP for the wall and XP penalty cap? if so, why? doesn't it discourage and un-promote roleplaying in the server?

Thanks in advance, for any answer.

Question is: Does it discourage you to role-play?

After a while xp progression becomes such a crippled snail, that you will eventually forget about your xp in overall. At least that's what happened to me. I don't care about the message and about levels. Dungeoneering becomes boring to me after a while, as well as pointless chit-chatting, but stories and dramas will never get boring, so that's a pretty good motivation for me to go on.

We all have different ways of playings, and using our free times to vent our stress, or share our passion with others.

For me, it is knowing that the progress made in roleplaying is actually reflected in the XP you get, as it allows for wizards to RP practicing spells with the same result, if not better, than farming the same dungeon over and over, with little to no interaction expect for "switch blades for flame weapon".  How does that, help promote role-playing?

Is that not more appealing, and helps promote the social aspect of our server more, than anything else?

Face it or not, this game is internet based, and part of the fun, aside from sharing stories, events and the like, we all feel connected to our characters. And even the extreme of us, such as myself, that enjoy the negative and bad aspects of playing a flesh and blood character, I want to know that she grows, and evolves both in memories and experience and strength. Does this make me a power gamer? I don't think so. But you are free to see it anyway you like.

But I digress, I was here to ask a question, any answers would be appreciated.

Dunno, you might have misunderstood me. Under stories i did not mean getting social chit-chatty. Only by focusing on char goals without any xp progression, I got my char into various messes and conflicts, faction play, investigations, between-character dramas, that just overshaded the xp caps for me.

Besides the 'slow down' is fairly common and constant if you play at least 1-2 hours a day, but the first cap is the 'blind drive', then the 'proverbial wall". I climbed up to lvl 9 in 4-5 month, without die-ing and had so much fun so far. And halfway to lvl 10 with the 'slow down' message.

I've had this same problem recently I made a new character rp'd and ran dungeons but had to stop playing my character all together because xp got cut so much; it was actually pretty disappointing because I was having so much fun with him.  I have no intentions to power level but at the same time part of the fun for is leveling.  Also I was told that u need to not log on my character at all for a few days for the xp cut to be reset, it was rather discouraging .  Also does anyone know how much xp is actually lost?

You don't lose any XP. It goes into a pool when you earn it, and then gets fed to your PC at a rate determined by how far capped you are (or aren't). The more capped you get, the longer it takes for the XP in the pool to get fed to your PC. This way you can't level up faster grinding than if you played more casually.

If that makes any sense at all from my description.

you never stop gaining xp, even rp xp. My best advice is this, and I have always followed it, "Ignore the rest messeges and focus on the roleplay; you will level when you do". Really do not focus on the rest messages, it just causes confusion. I have always just ignored them and focused on just roleplaying and that has always been more fun to me then worrying if I will be able to level or not.

hope this advice helps :)

how to slow down with the xp gain?
is very easy.
dont go adventuring with just anyone.
Your char does not like everyone, you char is not that safe even with a high level char. You have to hate, dont trust some folks.
It is a sure way.
Just think on the background and allignement of your character.
Would you go with a character with a good alligned character if you knew he was evil to the core?
solution a: you get many and more xp
solution b: you dont get xp, but you acted according to your allignement:)

I made my char Conrad, like in april or so, and this is the second time i got the message i am not on bonus xp.

When i had my previous char i was constantly hitting the wall, allthough than xp gain was much higher. Still it made me go forward, the stories, the info, the lore you were able to gather:) And the interaction with others. This is what keeps me moving and motivated. If you are on hard cap, just slow down, and socialise, or dont push your char to the limits. It will decrease your xp cap, and eventually it will go down, if the xp gain is a great motivation for you.:)

It also happened to me, but after I stopped paying attention to the experience messages I also -- coincidentally -- ceased to level. I can't even remember the last time any of my characters gained a level, but my highest character halted his progress at level 7.

Hmm, I'll bring it up this developer meeting.
