Les Esprits Curieux Tract

[A new leaflet is added to the many others around Port-A-Lucine]

Issue 1
Salutations readers, to the first issue of Les Esprits Curieux Tract! A new publication, which promises new perspectives for the political, and popular culture of Port-A-Lucine!We pride ourselves on the fact that, unlike many other publications, we are in no way beholden to outside investment or sponsorship. LECT will strive tirelessly to bring you educated and insightful articles on the trends, events and politics of this city.
Le Tournoi des armes.

"The city of Port-A-Lucine waits with baited breath for the upcoming Tournament of Arms put on by Les Chat Noir in association with Monsieur Henri De Montagne. The event will feature dueling with both rapier and pistol, and is to be held in honor of the founding of the Council of Brilliance. Perhaps Monsieur Montagne's generous sponsorship of this event in the Council's honor, will help shake the memories of scandal that have kept him out of a much desired position in the Council for so long. His continual sponsorship of Les Chats Noir has indeed put his name on every lip. In all four quarters it is asked "Will his son Julien de Montagne take part in the upcoming tournament?". Hardly anyone who was there has forgotten his less than masculine display at The Winter Rapier Tournament, also sponsored by both Les Chat Noir, and Henri De Montagne. Despite Monsieur Henri De Montagne's generous donations to the judge of his son's round, young Julien went home empty handed that day, when he was unable muster the courage to participate. This being one of many times Julien's behavior has reflected poorly on Monsieur Henri De Montagne.

Commendably Henri De Montagne stands by his son, saying "My son is a good person. Yes, he has made some poor lifestyle choices but who has not?". Montagne is truly the sort of man to stand behind his family and decisions, even if at times they cast a blot on what would otherwise be such political promise. Perhaps this is why Montagne continually sponsors Les Chat Noir, despite some of the unattractive whispers about them. Indeed Montagne's faith seems well placed, as Les Chat Noir has come a long way from it's questionable founding. Les Chat Noir's new president Celine LaFleur, is doubtlessly a vast improvement over it's last president, a woman named Alana who dressed as a devil and would proudly announce she was a prostitute. However those days are all behind for Les Chat Noir. Yes, now the women of Les Chat Noir are now a tightly knit group of friends. They seem nearly inseparable and to have such deep affection for one and other. At times they have been reported to physically show each other their fondness. Some believe there is more than friendships between them, and accounts of them being spotted together in romantic embrace, spring up across the city. The Presedent Celine LaFleur regardless presses on, with a number of exciting events being planned as well as preparing herself for her wedding to Monsieur Edmond Montte, we wish them both the best.

Only a few short days remain until the Tournament of Arms is held, and we look forward to attending. With all the intrigue and rumors surrounding Les Chat Noir and their closely associated sponsor Henri De Montagne doubtless the event will draw quite the crowd who will be watching them as much as the tournament. "

[A new issue is distributed]

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -issue two-

Le jour du tournoi des armes

At long last the day of The Tournament of Arms arrives, and a crowd gathers in the Port-A-Lucine outskirts to observe the spectacle. Les Chat Noir and their closely associated financier Monsieur Henri De Montagne had proudly placed out several mats and targets, as well and a scattered company of wooden stools to greet the attendants. After the attendants had settled on their roughen stools and places on the ground, the competition was underway! President Celine LaFleur greeted the crowd and told them of the three rounds that were to be held, Fencing, Senior Fencing, and Pistols.

Of competitors in the less seasoned fencing division there were three. The rounds were quickly over, and the first place prize was taken by a local veteran of the Falkovnian War, Monsieur Guillaume, after he violently defeated a young man and a woman. His savage military style setting a precedent for the remainder of the Tournament. Tripping an opponent, disarming him, or wildly hacking at him were all welcome in this, delightfully nontraditional exhibition of Fencing skill. Among the competitors of the more seasoned Fencers were some notable faces from Port-A-Lucine, Including two local Red Vardo, Genderme Edmond Montte, and local artist Absalom Nightlyre. Monsieur Nightlyre fought as only a three foot tall poet could, and was the first eliminated after the other competitors had all had their chance to trip him or otherwise bull him off his feet. Monsieur Nightlyre later stormed off amidst the contest after he and his bodyguard had an altercation with a Falkovnein, who was in attendance. Genderme Edmond Montte dressed in his uniform did exceedingly well in all the rounds his fiance Celine LaFleur placed him in. That is until the final round where he was brutally savaged by the mountain of a Caliban the Red Vardo had brought, a hulking, horned and gray skinned Caliban named Senies. Who like Genderme Montte, had won all of his previous rounds resoundingly, save one round where t'other Vardo Monsieur Amaril refused to compete against his Caliban companion. In the end the Gold Rapier was awarded to the foreign Caliban, and a bloodied Edmond Montte received the second place award. However Gendarme Motte would redeem himself in the Pistol competition where he bested his younger brother, and a very pregnant woman, who came in second place while doing her shooting for two.

Les Chat Noir's sponsor, Monsieur Henri De Montagne and his son Julien were not in attendance to witness the tournament. Nor was any house of substance, however many foreigners and some commoners were preset to see the day's honors going to Genderme Edmond Montte, and the Vardo's Caliban, for the honor of the Council of Brilliance.

[New issues are spread]

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Three-

Salutations once again gentle readers, and good folk of Port-a-Lucine. Monsieur Antome here to tell you all about the numerous interesting and exciting happenings, upcoming in this our fine city. Once again I have placed my ear to the ground on your behaves to bring you articles containing insight into the events of Port-a-Lucine, and not just rhetoric as other papers would so willingly feed you.

Une Nuit de la Mode~

Théatre de la Cathédrale, in association with Les Chat Nior, will be presenting a fashion show that they claim will be an annual event. Admission to this event is free, however afterward the clothing will be auctioned off for charity. Their charity of choice? The Church of Ezra. While the city is buzzing about with interest over this sure-to-be beautiful and exciting event, there are some less than winsome rumors regarding the spectacle. This fashion show was not always a conjoined affair, both groups take credit for having come up with the idea first, and have various evidence to support their claims. Les Chats made their announcement much sooner, however before that Théatre de la Cathédrale had been hiring clothing designers. Fortunately the two organizations have decided to combine their events and discontinue their opprobrious dispositions. Yet still there is a carrion bird perched atop this would-be-olive branch. The two groups while hosting the event together, will not be combining their shows. Instead opting to host two separate shows back to back. A simple technicality, or is it some sign of continued rancor between the two groups?

Tournoi de L'or~

An upcoming tournament sponsored by the Red Vardo of Dementlieu, and hosted by recent addition to our city, Cervantes du Maare, will soon be presented in the outskirts of this our fair city. In this affair, unlike a decorous tournament such as fencing, all styles of combat will be welcomed. This, and the vast sum of solars afforded the champions will doubtlessly entice great variety of uncouth combatants barbarously hacking at one and other with cudgels and all manner of weaponry. Doubtlessly this event is not to be missed by those with a strong desire to indulge in a day of savagery.
However, what of the man who presents us with this event? Cervantes du Maare, and his wife Tarja have recently taken full time residence in the City of Port-a-Lucine, leaving behind their lives in uncouth land of Barovia and who could blame them? Their lives here must be a vast improvement from their former ones, where the Lady Tarja worked disrobing herself in a Barovian pillow house, reputedly run by a crime lord. Monsieur du Maar is not without his own disreputable past, asking around many have described him as a violent, hubristic man. Perhaps this is true, it seems they have brought with them some of the savage inclinations from Barovia. Both Tarja and Cervantes have in the past been charged with assault within the city of Port-a-Lucine. Only time will tell if these newcomers will adapt to a more refined life, or if their brutality will continue on our own streets.

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Four-

Salutations readers, to the fourth issue of LECT. We here at LECT have been attending all of Port-a-Lucine's social events, from the tremendous to the tedious, to bring you inside perspective.

Le jour de Tournoi de L'or
The much anticipated day of the Tournoi de L'or has come and gone, and it must be said dear readers that the tournoi was a spectacle most interesting. Only a few more daring and interested citizens of Port-a-Lucine came out to witness, and as predicted the event brought out a cacophony of low brow degenerates from foreign lands. However despite the crass company of competitors the host Cervantes du Maare kept the proceedings orderly and eventful, while his wife Tarja, the former dancer at a Pillow-house, scurried about providing refreshments. The Port-a-Lucine Vardo has assured everyone that since they were sponsoring this event they would not enter any member into the competition.

A wooden ring was erected, and flanked by an assembly of comfortable chairs, for the spectators, who were pleased that at this tournoi they were not reduced to sitting on the ground. There were three divisions a competitor could enter, Novice, Experienced, and master. The novice was the most populated devision and the day's honer in that division went to Monsieur Nightlyre who acquitted himself much better in this Tournoi than in previous events. In the experienced division the honor went to a rather large creature called a "Mul" who was not in anyway at a disadvantage although he fought empty handed. Lastly in the Master division the championship went to a curious foreign woman with a painted face, named Lin Von'Heim, who also fought without a weapon, or in fact shoes.

The last fight for the Championship was a bout between Lin Von'Heim and the "former" Vardo, Senies. The great lumbering Caliban, Senies arrived with the Vardo, stood beside them the entire time, and left with them. However we are told most profusely he is no longer among their ranks. He just simply follows them about doing everything for them he did before independently, I suppose we are to believe?

In other news "Une Nuit de la Mode", presented by Théatre de la Cathédrale, in association with Les Chat Nior, has been postponed indefinitely, due to lack of interest.

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Five-

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this volume of Les Espirits Curieux Tract! Today, we write about something that is on all our minds: the threat that we all face from an unknown serial killer or group of killers, and the state of our own security.

Signs of gendarmes being brutally murdered and butchered have been seen scattered all about the city. The identity of this heinous mass murderer or group of murderers is, as of yet, unknown, but is believed to be some sort of stunted caliban beast or possibly even the warning signs of a caliban uprising. Law-abiding citizens are advised to keep themselves away from sewer-grates in all parts of the city.

Of course, this crime spree as of late begs the question: what can be presumed to be the catalyst? Certainly not the recent induction and impressment of various foreigners into the service of the Gendarme...

~ Suzette D. Nymme

Nouvo nan Gendarme-

There are few domains in the Core who can boast a military force as well trained or advanced as the forces of Dementlieu. The Republic can boast a large professional army comprised of hardened men both local and foreign, led by the finest of our noblès. This Military force protects Dementlieu's interests across the domain, and around the core. However the day-to-day defense and upholding the law of the cities, towns, and hamlets is tasked to local Gendarmes. Unlike the Professional army, the esteemed office of a Gendarme is reserved for men of gentle birth. The office of Gendarme is not to be confused with a Military force, it is an honored and lofty position that has always been granted to noblès of high standing.

That is until recently. Within this last month alone, three foreigners have been granted this honored office. Three foreigners of questionable background and origin.
Wymmer Drukker: An elderly man, and self proclaimed "Natural Philosopher" of Lamordian decent. This Drukker fellow has apparently been enlisted to serve as a Physician for Port-a-Lucine's Gendarme. As anyone knows Lamordia and Falkovnia have a somewhat friendly diplomatic relationship and with war brewing and Falkovnia's pension for espionage, one must question the wisdom of this decision.
Elfric Gotz: This new Gendarme doesn't even speak High Mordentish, and is married to a Lamordian woman. Our sources have turned up this Elfric character, is formerly of Barovia, and ethnically a Gundarakite. A small country annexed by Barovia and Invidia. Our sources indicate he was also affiliated with an extremist organization within Barovia that hoped to topple it's government.
Cervantes du Maare: Reportedly the new Master-or-arms for the Gendarme, despite having a criminal record in the city for assault, his foreign origin, and wife the head mistress of a Barovian pleasure house.

I ask you, dear reader, have we fallen so far? Is our need so great that we must enlists such questionable folk into an office of dignity and prestige, normally reserved only for the gentle? Does this truly make you feel safe?

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Six-

Greetings once again dear readers. In this, our sixth issue of LECT we present to you, an opinion piece by our new writer, Suzette D. Nymme. -Humbert F. Antome, Editor

"The Vardo's latest import"

The Red Vardo Traders are a consortium of merchants from Krezk, a city in Barovia. They've seen only growth since their establishment in our fine republic, though this may quickly change. Indeed, for their latest import, a man by the name of Sedrik Benthur, is turning heads and turning away once-valued customers.

The Hero of Barovia, as he is dubbed, enjoys nothing more than to stir up trouble in the Quartier Publique, which makes one question exactly how the low the standard for 'heroes' in that quaint and backwards realm must be. Reports of the man shoving an elderly gendarme and dueling other members of the Red Vardo Traders in the middle of the streets reveal to us the image of a thug and not a hero - though in the land of Barovia, they very well might be the one and the same.

Make no mistake, though, Sedrik Benthur went through a most rigorous training regimen, going from a probationary member to a full member of the Red Vardo Traders over the course of one day. We at L.E.C.T. can only assume that the probationary period only lasted for as long as it took the senior members to determine that Sedrik Benthur had a pulse, then he was given the company uniform and sent on his merry way to do... whatever it is he does for them.

We assume that is the job that Senies used to occupy within the Red Vardo Traders... oh, I'm sorry! Senies was never a member of the Red Vardo Traders, he just happened to be wearing red and black, and now he is only wearing black, which, as Madame Jinx so condescendingly states, is a very common color.

Since the Red Vardo Traders believe they can allow just about any piece of refuse the right to wear their colors and represent them in our fine city, we should show Madame Jinx, who clearly does not value her patrons' opinions about her questionable business practices, what we really think about what she's doing by boycotting her goods entirely. She apparently judges us for idiots that will buy her wares regardless, so let us show her otherwise.

~ Suzette D. Nymme

P.S. Because I don't want to let my colleague and fellow writer Humbert F. Antome have all the fun: Lord Henri de Montagne's son Julien enjoys the company of men in the bedchambers.

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Seven-

Dear readers, by now I am sure you are all aware that the author of this paper you hold in your hand, is wanted by the Gendarme of Port-a-Lucine. Do not distress loyal readers, we here at LECT knew this to be an inevitability, and threw caution to the wind to bring you this paper. Everyone knows that a wild animal will fight with more ferocity the closer you've come to it's lair, and so to those who we have rankled, by striking to close to the truth. Make no mistake dear readers, this is an obvious attempt at censorship, and bullying. Lord Henri de Montagne's sons sexual exploits have in the past been called into question by other publications, in two issues of "Le Nouvel Observateur", were those writers put on trial? No.

Even as we speak, someone or something is stalking the streets of Port-a-Lucine, hunting, and murdering Gendarme. Where I ask, are the wanted notices for that killer? Why are the efforts of the Gendarme going into tracking down the publicist of what has been called a "gossip rag", when there is so obviously more pressing matters at hand? For the answer to that, one needn't look far. Only to the man leading the charge against our publication, Gendarme Edmond Montte. Monsieur Montte, husband to Celine LaFleur, President of Les Chats Nior, an organization we've written on, and also the editor and chief of a rival publication "Les Républicains Gazette". Oh how thin the veil, how laughably obvious the charade, dear readers.

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Nine-

Few have mustered up the courage to dare comment on the man or, rather, the half-man who runs the Theatre de la Cathedrale, Absalom Nightlyre. Few dare mention the Jalabert Family's disgraceful dalliance with those from Levkarest. Few dare to call out either of these two for their rather tenuous allegiance with our majestic republic. Thus, the task falls to Les Esprits Curieux Tract and to me to bring to the public's attention what Absalom and the Jalaberts would have liked you to forget.

Let it not be forgotten that Pierre Jalabert, Jr. broke with tradition and marry the Borcan baroneasa, Luciana Armont. Eventually, the Borcan poisoner would reveal her true nature to the world by killing two gendarmes and putting a third by the name of Luc Fignon into a coma. Luc Fignon would wake from his sleep, but the other two victims who fell in the line of duty would not. Our hearts go out to the families of these brave men.

Although Luciana Armont has likely fled the city, her taint lives on, as it was she who first hired the halfling by the name of Absalom Nightlyre. It should be no secret as to why the petite playwright is fond of the works of Cezar Vercezzo. Rumor has it he maintains deals with Borcans outside the city, linked to the Black Widow herself. The Jalaberts, corrupted and still haunted by the ghastly imprint Armont left behind, have done little aside from hole themselves up in their estate and let their legacy be torn to shreds.

Why is this halfling's face a pasty grey? Why does his "wife" dress like a criminal, with a black hood and cloak? Why does Luciana Armont stalk the city now, preying Anais Jalabert? These questions are not important. There is only one that is: should they deserve our sympathy?

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Ten-

Death of Absalom Nightlyre.

A fortnight has passed since the funeral for Absalom Nightlyre, and still the dark cloud that hung over the city on that day, remains. Few will ever forget the emotion that came along with the news of the death of this prominent young artist, tears were shed, chests pounded, and hair pulled. Understandably Grief takes many forms, and as the news of Absalom's death hit the streets many turned out to the theater to pay their respects, on in one case lack there of. The Black Cat Celine Montte showed her claws at Absalom's vigil by gloating and make accusations about the deceased, even in front of his widow. Thankfully Mademoiselle Montte has shown enough grace not to laugh in the face of Absalom's adopted daughter who is now left fatherless.

It is said that time heals all wounds, but we here at LECT find the scab being picked open time and time again by the nagging question of the truth of what actually happened to Monsieur Nightlyre? Many suspect foul play, and it is no secret that Absalom had his share of ill-wishers, but who would wish his death, who stands to benefit? Could it have been Falkovnian agents, his former employer Luciana Armont, or rival in the entertainment industry? While many are asking these questions there are some few who seem completely uninterested, namely the Gendarme. Perhaps Gendarme Edmond Montte share's his wife's pleasure at the passing Absalom, as he has yet to lift a finger in effort to bring justice.

The impact of the loss of Absalom Nightlyre, reaches far and wide. One can't walk down the street in the Publique and not feel how much it has changed without him. Where once there was a busy theater alive with cheers and stories now there is silence. And the loss is (in this writer's opinion) deeper still. A piece of interests, intrigue, and intellect is forever lost to us, one we are not like to see again. We here at LECT wish to extend our condolences to Periappi and Estelle Nightlyre, and our sincere hope that you find the justice you deserve.

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Eleven-

Fencing Foiled.

A recent fencing competition was held here in our city of Port-a-Lucine sponsored and hosted by House Dauphin in their lovely estate in the Quarter Savant. The event was also sponsored by House Montte, though it may be easy to forget as we've thus far been unable to determine what their contribution was. Guests were invited into the lovely estate where Charles Dauphin (The only member of house Dauphin in attendance) greeted spectators and participants alike. Rules were set forth for the competition, There would be no stepping outside the ring, and disarming your opponent was an instant victory. Then the competition was underway.

Martin Avenier local businessman was pitted against a foreign brute named Ingwulf who won by knocking Martin off his feet repeatedly. Monsieur Avenier took the loss quite well and with good spirit. Afterward Dame Renee Delven was pitted against Gerard Montte (a lesser Montte, if such a thing was imaginable). The victory going to Gerard Montte, by way of disarming Dame Delven. This outcome was under much dispute as spectators claim Gerrard stepped out of the ring before disarming his opponent. Thankfully the judges of the competition Matthew Montte and Edmond Montte deemed it acceptable.  Next the Capitaine Reynard of Port-a-Lucine's Gendarme had a bout with Monsieur Inari Delcroux, a young gentleman who arrived with his female companion "Rose". Capitaine Reynard made short work of Monsieur Delcroux, besting the younger man admirably. Then the dwarf Guillaume Le Rigoureux, a veteran of the previous Falkovnian war and former bodyguard to the deceased artist Absalom Nightlyre bested a man named Quinn in an uneventful match.

Then the second match ups began. With an odd number of competitors, Cervantes du Maare, our current Gendarme Master-or-arms competed against the brute Ingwulf. In this round du Maare showed Ingwulf real brute force was, beating him savagely while demanding that Ingwulf yield. When Ingwulf did manage to cry out yield turning to flee, du Maare stabbed him in the back not once but twice, claiming he took his back-step for a thrust. Next Guillaume Le Rigoureux fought Gerard Montte, who despite having won his previous round against a woman, was unable to best a man, even one half his size. Afterwards Cervantes du Maare was to fight Gendarme Capitaine Reynard, but declined to oppose his superior in contest in a show of obsequiousness or cowardice.
Then for the honor of the day Capitaine Reynard and Guillaume Le Rigoureux were to fight, but before blades were crossed Le Rigoureux hurled claims at Capitaine Reynard, claiming him inept in solving the murder of Absalom Nightlyre, when the fighting began Capitaine Reynard quickly bested the dwarf. A wounded and distraught Le Rigoureux  while still in the ring pulled a flintlock from his coat, as everyone in attendance gasped. Le Rigoureux  placed the flintlock to his head and asked for Nightlyre's forgiveness and then pulled the trigger. Men jumped from their seats and women turned away as the dwarf did so, but there was nothing but a "click". It seemed Le Rigoureux had neglected to load his flintlock. Master-at-arms Cervantes du Maare then heroically fell upon the unarmed, wounded and weeping dwarf to promptly haul him off to prison. After the display the event had lost some of it's flavor and guests began to leave, only a few lingering to sample the new Dauphin vintages.

Les Esprits Curieux Tract -Issue Twelve-

A gander at the Goose.

Citizens of Port-a-Lucine who find themselves on a stroll through Le quartier des marchands may have taken note of a new shop that has opened in a dingy warehouse stuffed between the Presses and the Red Vardo Traders' shop. A cobbled together storefront has been placed in the old warehouse, that serves as the base of operations for  the excessively long-named "The Clockwork Goose Apothecary and Engineerium Trading Company" hereafter referred to as "The Goose" for the sake of brevity (and the printing press!). The shop, should you be so fortunate as to find anyone attending it, claims to sell a wide variety of trinkets both imported and created, although to date we've yet to see any "inventions" from the so-called "Engineerium".

In fact it seems the only thing being engineered by The Goose is incivility, as recently displayed at an auction held by The Goose where the guests and patrons were loomed over by three armed and armored Goose guards. Guards who removed a petit woman from the proceedings for "speaking out of turn" and at one point were so brazen as to order Helené duSuis, member of the Council of Brilliance to seat herself! The auction itself was run by Doctor Drukker, head of The Goose, who's monotonous, lecturing voice nearly lulled the crowd to sleep. The self styled "Natural Philosopher" Doctor Drukker is far from in his element attempting to entertain and it shows. With the exception of his publication "The Arcane Illusion" a tomb in which he denies the existence of magic, that we find a very comedic work. This is why we here at LECT find it so surprising that such a man was chosen to be the new Manager of La Théatre de la Cathédrale. The mind boggles as why such an tedious, uncharismatic man may have been chosen, but doubtless it involves all the time the Doctor has been spending in the company his escort,  former theater manager Dame Lilianne de Moreau.

A recent circulation of the notorious publication has been sighted in piles around the city, and posted on walls in public places.

It is not certain if this is -the Humbert F. Antome, or simply a copycat, but the fact is:  This has been distributed, and if this is not Humbert F. Antome, it is someone wishing to appear as him.

[A new issue of L.E.C.T. is printed on shabby sheets of paper and distributed about town. Humbert F. Antome, if he is the real thing, seems to have become more polemical in his writings and less fueled by acerbic wit and sarcasm. It seems to have been written in response to the latest issue of L'Observateur, the time of its printing being shortly after L'Observateur's.]

Les Esprits Curieux Tract - "Issue Fifteen" -

Issue Issues

Salutations readers, to the fifteenth issue of Les Esprits Curieux Tract. Although it may surprise some of you to learn this is only the thirteenth issue actually penned by me, Humbert F. Antome. Yes, gentle readers the last two issues of this notorious publication were forgeries. Some of these forgeries did a better job of representing LECT's mission "providing you unbiased, truthful news adorned with levity and reproachful critique" than others. However both were written under the guise of LECT to steal some of our publication's credibility for their own messages. You may be curious then why this is written as the Fifteenth issue when Thirteen and Fourteen were fraudulent, and I tell you, dear reader. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and these imitations bespeak a need for LECT, for a publication that is beholden to no one and spares none. The more I've thought on it the more I adamantly believe that the Thirteenth and Fourteenth issues of LECT are the ones I am most proud of, despite not having penned a word of them. For they tell us that someone somewhere will not be afraid to pick up the torch and continue to write independent publications, and not just the Government approved L'Observateur, and La Bougie, owned by Councilmen d'Honaire's lickspittle.

You must all be wondering where I have been, and that is a question that truly shames me, dear reader. Since I last spoke with you I have had innumerable troubles and been hounded by those who would see this paper silenced. Some whom I have written about and some who protect their interests. As much as it shames me, I ran. I put aside LECT, and you in a time or turmoil for our fair republic. And for that I will never forgive myself, but I do offer recompense. I vow to renew this paper, and to live up to our promise in the first issue, to " strive tirelessly to bring you educated and insightful articles on the trends, events and politics of this city". I will offer accolades and acknowledgement to those worthy, and I will expose what others would sweep under the rug, to the light of day.
