Dumb question
« on: September 12, 2011, 12:16:19 PM »
I'm at school right now and stuck here for about 8 hours every Monday with nothing to do. I've tried using the schools epic internet to access the server, but Gamespy doesn't seem to want to connect or anything. I've tried Direct Connecting, but was met with a 'timeout error'.

Is there a way to circumvent going through Gamespy (to at least try getting on) or am I just screwed sitting here bored and hungry?

Any suggestions are welcome, but not holding my breath. :)

It is possible to make a direct connect shortcut to the server which avoids going through Gamespy:

Just found this trick on another forum. It'll allow you instantly connect to PotM just by using a shortcut on your desktop or start bar.

1. Create a new shortcut anywhere it suits you (right click > new > shortcut)

2. Direct it to nwmain.exe

3. Once the shortcut is created, right click on it and open the properties.

4. Add " +connect 84.238.55.137:5121" where it says "target" (note the space in front of the "+")
Example: C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\nwmain.exe +connect 84.238.55.137:5121

Voila, you'll be able to instantly connect to PotM using a shortcut.

Hope any one will find this useful.

However it is also possible that the network connection at your school is just limited in terms of certain types of connectivity pertaining to online games (firewalls, closed ports etc)

They more than likely blocked Gamespy deliberately. :P

Looks like I can't access my Ventrilo, either, so I'm guessing they just up and blocked everything of the sort. Bastards.

Not even just blocking gamespy. From my knowledge computers at Schools are naturally picky. It'd literally require either a teacher's password, or some fiddling on your own end. Least, that's what I had to do back in the day to go to websites I wasn't meant to go to. Mr. Harris was a badass.

I have a six hour break on Thursdays between classes.  Hoping to test my school's connection this week to see if it'll allow me to lounge and pass the time with you fine people and your lovely pixels.  Fingers crossed.

Corporate firewall man. It feels wrong, but in my group, we have to block everything.  Facebook, Twitter, literally every site having to do with games of any sort, yahoo, hotmail, gmail, this very site... and on and on.

Just a little word of warning form anyone that would not know how these things work, but the filters send every new site accessed directly to the inbox of the IT admins. There it is reviewed and blocked due to content.  Games, Pornography, Media Sharing, Illegal/illicit and Gore are the primary categories that every company seems to block.. If anything can be construed as any of those things, its blocked permanently. If you access a site successfully one day, and get blocked the next it is your own doing. Big brother knows what you were doing, and where you sat. Any large spike in bandwith like using a port to play a game won't last long.

It works that way in the past four networks I have administered, though none of them were schools.  Schools usually don't have as rigid of a filter, and/or not as many eyeballs on traffic, but they still have enough to limit gaming on their networks though.  If you find yourself on filtered networks often, look into getting a WISP, such a Clearwire. They have enough speed to play NWN (At least one player I know uses it exclusively, to play PotM) and the prices and coverage are soooo much better than they once were.

Make a buddy of your local IT worker at your college, then get put on the exception list and be able to access the game.

Both universities i have gone and go to, have allowed gaming on their wires. You could see a lot of guys play WOW even during classes, not to mention FPS-s, league of legends, whatever they loved or wanted to do they could, i think not even porn was closed there. Of course the bandwiths at universities are very good and very wide, they get it for very cheap prices since many of the students go to work to these companies once they finish the univs.
The only thing they forbid now is dling illegal content, like fresh movies or series or whatever. (Because these dorms got raided a few times...)
By us the private use of the internet is very liberal, and unless you are doing business with illegal content many a times the authorities wont even bother with you. (Mainly because it is not worth it:D)
